Mines

I am 'this' close to pulling mines out of High Guard altogether.

My issue is that, even with thrusters, space is BIG, which really limits the ability to put mines in the right place. You either need gawdawful numbers of them or really fast motors - in which case they are no longer mines, they are missiles.

Happy to hear thoughts here but, aside from close orbit, I am having trouble seeing mines actually working...

I wanna approach mines with a little Cybermen logic. The simple solution is to "DELETE!" them. As you say, space is big. It should be nigh impossible to manage to get hit by a mine.

If we, on the other hand, want to keep mines, we can always "UPGRADE!"them. We can't simply add powerful trusters, that'd turn them into missiles. But what if we stop looking at mines as munition, and turn them into small drones? Say... 5 dtons or something. Give them low or no maneouvreability, a sensor package and fire control. When anything comes close enough, they launch their payload, which could be a one-shot missile barbette or a single torpedo, for instance.

There could also be an option fo fire them remotely, based on sensor data from a nearby ship. Perhaps a cheaper mine option, that can't fire on its own at all?

We could also go nuts and create a mine-laying module for cutters, allowing them to carry and deploy 4-6 mines, plus a control room to supervise and remote-control them. Said module could also be used to pick up spent mines, re-arm and fix them.

Obviously, the idea needs more thought and polish, but it could work. Perhaps?

I did think about specialised computer software/communications systems that would allow a ship to lay missiles like eggs, and then activate them remotely...

That is an excellent idea! I was toying with something similar a while ago...

I'm not sure special software would even be needed? How about just adding a few lines about delayed thruster ignition? Though, if everyone can always to it, it might greatly change how missiles (and torpedoes?) are used.... Setting traps and general sneakyness...

It does mean that, with prep time, a ship carrying missile turrets could mimic bays by popping out missile after missile, until it has a swarm floating around, and then attack, with all of them in a single barrage.

I think for sheer cool effect, and Space-Opera applicability they need to be there.

Perhaps just make them workable... they would have to be stealth hulled, long-life spanned, sudden-"rockets".

Basically they're sitting around trying to be all stealthy with emission absorption (Stealth hull and emission absorption), then they make an attack at the last second like a missile (vulnerable to dodging and point defense). Simple and straight forward. All you need is a ratio of how many mines are needed to cover X amount of space to be an effective...

I had the same thought, but using torpedoes. Where you could drop off a sensor drone along with a swarm of deposited torps. The sensor drone can trigger the torpedo attack removing the need for highly specialized torpedoes.
