MH07 - A Good Day

Next year definately needs:
-Traders of stuff suitable to MGP, so VaS, scenery possibly even Simple Miniatures Games and the like.
-More Dedicated demo games (Though the death race was awesome and will deifinately need running every year! (Because Allah wills it))
-Grub of some sort, though the pub round the corner was very nice.
-Hopefully more previews? I guess there were plently, I'm just not a roleplayer or an ACTA player.
-Maybe a form of 'bring and battle'.
-More tournaments or competitions (I know this was attempted).
-More staff maybe? Looked a little thin, I found it hard to ask any questions on the trade stand for the first couple of hours!
-All the lads from the US, I have yet to meet Mr. Chang.

Cheers again, it was a good day. These are purely suggestions to make an even better day!

make use of your mongoose infantry or other volunteers to run demo/join in games of stuff.
I wouldnt have minded running 2e CTA games (if we had the fleet lists too) and low roller ran a good BFE game (well good for me, bad for rob).

Thanks to the GM who ran the RuneQuest Glorantha game in the morning - my first game of RQ :)

Also thanks to the Mongoose Staff member who I probably bored to tears speaking about my concerns over the RQ combat system and how the player's update make shields practically useless.

Overall I like the enthusiasm for RQ but I am still unlikely to buy hardcopies of the game with the combat system as is (either original or the player's update).

Cheers!

Three cheers for the mongoose team, they held a good day

I must say I was very disappointed...

First off I wasn't sure what to expect, don't play anything much MGP but felt this would be the ideal opportunity for myself (and my Warhammer fan boy son) to discover the joys of ST, BF:Evo and VaS (and maybe ACTA).

That there was not an ST or BF:Evo party game was a BIG disappointment. Even if catering for existing customers the opportunity for them to try new armies or troop types existed... Not sure why MGP couldn't organise this at the very least.

There was a VaS game but a mix of (very) small 1/3000th ships and carboard counters did not look inspiring (and I wasn't sure whether this was a private game, a demo or whatever).

And although not an RPGer maybe some intro 30 minute sessions for young kids who don't know what the hell RPG's are.

The Death Race was good, but this was the ONLY visually appealing game and it isn't a product MGP actually sell...

Trade stand wise (glossing over the MGP staffer who tried to charge my son £25 for the plastic tanker - and yes it was the £15 one on the website, and no it wsn't bought...) the ST display was poor (things fell over for a pastime and it would have been nice to see painted/made up models - you want £30 for something? How big is it, what does it look like out the box?) MGP could have done a lot better here (the B5 display was excellent).

Overall if it hadn't been for the second hand GW stand the event would have been a complete bust (as it was I felt so guilty sticking my son in a car for a 100 mile round trip on a very hot day I bought him a load of second hand Eldar - and that was not the idea behind going!!)

I suppose if you were an MGP customer it was an opportunity to pick up some new stuff, talk to the staff etc, but for new customers it was dead and overall a big opportunity lost.

that game of VAS was actually a "Bring and Battle" game between myself and Alexb23, I had the counters, one thing i will say about that game, we had near enough a mirror image fleet, there were only two differences mine was royal navy and his was US, and the second, he had one more cruiser than me.

after awhile of not being able to fire at anything what so ever except the battle ships, cruisers and destroyers moving over 7" and at long range, GRRR, we gave up and had the battleships duke it out as they were alongside each other and in the same direction, doing near enough equal damage each turn. we settled it at crippled,

lessons learnt, 1: dont have mirror image fleets unless you want, not a boring but, uneventful game 2: remember to go to the cash machine before you arrive and 3: I want some of those 2x2 tiles that were on sale but in sea blue for vas games.

I saw it, again, not that inspiring.
Nick (Mongoose_Acolyte) actually has fleets for this game for his demos which would have been great.
I could have run a large SST game, be it MI vs Bugs or all 3 having a bash at each other.
BF:Evo could have been run, we run a tiny demo game that ended badly as I didnt make a proper army list!
It was very much a B5 event more than anything. I know this is where MGP excell, but for a lot of us it was a fairly boring event.

However, I did finally pick up the skinnie general boxed set. I'm trying to find a good colour scheme. I might just stick to my old red and black.

no kidding.. that bfe demogame took longer to set up than finish heh

That's a shame that a potential new customer was turned off by the event. Hopefully Mongoose will make sure that there are demos of their most popular games available in the future at events like this.

For the record. . . VAS rocks! I'm sorry you didn't get a chance to try it out.

I didn't go in the end. I was going to go, then there were issues with trains, then i could lift- Yay! Then S&P 47 came out and i didn't see the point anymore.

As a SST and BF:Evo player i didn't see any value in a long journey for 2 games that are on hold and stuff i don't play. I've been before but BF:Evo has been the big draw for me in the past.

yep, we honour the brave memory of the 2 SAS ran over by a technical but they saved everyone else :D

only had a couple of problems with the evo game - losing a leader rule is just stupid, even the most basic infantry man will either get on with the job or find cover, not stand next to a challie :D especially when the leader is just a lance jack so is basically not much more than the guys hes leading.
and the ambush rule for SAS. three fedayeen walk into a building where the SAS are in ambush, but they still get to react to the SAS charge which in theory would be them coming from behind pillars and slitting throats without a chance at reaction. i mean 4 SAS v 3 fedayeen that dont know they are there - life expectancy maybe 3 seconds, how they supposed to react?

Well the rules are free to download from S&P Issue 46 and the Technicals are something that Mongoose sells.

LBH

i think iron crow made some good points their.

these events should be to attreact new customers, these type of events are in effect giant trade stands, for a company to promote itself and show people the social fun side of games.

maybe their should have been a big game of SST running or a small mission for people to complete. and then at same time have a huge sell of, of old SST stock and crazy prices, to hook people in, ready for new version.

Bf-evo i would have done 1-2 missions from the book to show people small forces can be good in evo, maybe have bags of infantry for sale at a discount for gamers to pick up, bags marked (seconds) so people know what their gettin, evan with broken tanks. maybe sell overstock of unit cards for 20p each so people can get the book and some cards and use thier existing modles to try the game out.

Maybe evan a scenery worksop where the plan was to make a city bourd of mogadishu or somthing, wich then could be shown in S&P one month then another month how it it was painted.

yes im a BF-evo fan il admit so i didnt go, i realy whanted to play the race game evan converted a technical for it !! but didnt see the value in going.

Im just waiting now for a BF-evo day, if they whant i can supplie dummies and combat gear for some displays.

one of the most enjoyable bits of the day was tha amount of roleplaying going on as yes played death race but also played slaine and conan in one day 8)

I managed to avoid buying anything (I kept going "ooooh! want!" and then forcing myself to take my hand away from my wallet - I'm trying to buy a new flat and don't need less money or more stuff I need to find a home for just now), but I did start a list of things I will be getting in a few months time :)

I took some photos, but fewer then usual: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dorward/archives/date-taken/2007/08/04/ and put up some more comments on my blog: http://www.thecoreworlds.net/blog/2007/08/mongoose-publishing-open-day-2007/
