Merc License

Banded Mongoose
I'm probably blind and dumb but IIRC, I read somewhere that a license is required to build merc cruisers and corsairs. I can't find the description on obtaining a license in mercenary.

Am I mixing up my Traveller versions, or am I just not finding information in the books that is readily available?

Thanks.

Probably the Star Mercs article for MegaTraveller or the book on the same subject in the GURPS Traveller line.

I was reading an article in an old copy of one of the Traveller Digest magazine a few weeks ago. I've not seen anything in MgT Core rules, and I don't have the Merc book...

According to my software's search function, the term "license" or "li-
cence" does only appear in the legalese of the PDFs of Mercenary and
High Guard, but nowhere in the actual text. :D

hdrider67,

Perhaps you are referring to a Mercenary Ticket (such as in CT TAS FORM 17) that related to building ships...

It sounds like something from one of the other editions or an article...

Nope. I did read about merc licenses but in the wrong OTU. The T-20 main book mentioned it in the Corsair description as did the GAS2: Corsair PDF, both of which I own.

I rather agree that the Imps would require a license to legitimize the merc trade but I couldn't find the roadblocks to building particular ships. Now I know I just got my Traveller books mixed up.

Thanks to all.

The TD14 article splits mercs into two broad classes. Groundpounders, mechanized or otherwise, don't require a license, though a set of good references is probably not a bad idea. Once you take your services for hire into space in any capacity other than simple transport, you fall into Imperial jurisdiction. As paramilitary ships at the very least, your operation will require Imperial sanction. A license.

The Broadsword class rides the line between needing a starmerc license or not. If you want to buy and operate Gazelles, however, you're in license territory.

Is there a source for Travellers Digest? If the price is fair, I might invest a few more bucks, esp if it's in pdf format.

Thanks for the tip!

Secondary market only, I'm afraid. Those were published by DGP, and are now 20 years out of print and not under Marc's control for re-printing.
