All in all it was a really good day. I had a few comments during the tournament that shows that the tournament pack needs a little adjustment (but not much) before GenCon, and a few e-mails and comments after the tournament that raises some important topics for me to think about.
I am VERY happy with how the scoring and such went down. It really showed to me that the system works and that people are rewarded not only for their hard and skillful playing styles, but also for putting together fair fleets and playing fun games.
From what I have seen and heard, If I have any suggestions to the players and potential players for GenCon; these would be them:
1> Make sure your opponent knows EXACTLY what you are rolling and why BEFORE you roll the dice.
2> Measuring ranges is one thing, but marking a table with dice and counters for enemy firing arcs, potential turning radii and the like just slows the game down and rings of rules abuse
3> If you have counters in your fleet at all (even if it is just for a few minor things) please place them out with your fleet for judging - they are a part of what you are bringing to the table
4> Even if you are playing the toughest and most uphill game in your life, play it with a smile and it will reflect in your Sportsmanship score
5> Play to the scenarios; just smashing your opponent is fun - but might not win you the match
6> Sometimes bringing the fleet that "everybody is talking about online" can hurt your Composition score; as your fellow players are who are judging you
7> Don't take back moves if you can help it; not only does it slow the game down but it also leaves room for misinterpretations of distance and rules lawyering
8> Unless your ship has SM in its turns listing, measure your moves and turns to a certain degree; just moving a ship because you "know it can get there" makes some players fussy
9> No matter how tough a scenario looks to your fleet selection, play it out; the results might surprise you
and 10> Running tournaments is stressful. Please be aware that the judge is going to be a scatter-brained stressball at these things, and can make momentary mistakes. Hopefully it will be minor, but if it is not, trust him to fix the situation as quickly as possible.
Hope everybody had a good time, and I can't wait to see you guys at GenCon!!!
Cheers all,
Bry
