MavenCon - ACTA Tournament Debut!!!

Well as much as I am disapointed that I am missing today's events, I am glad that I did not make the trip.

Apparently there were a number of auto crashes on I-70 yesterday including a big rig that jackknifed on the westbound side of the road and had things blocked for hours near Dayton right about 11 am yesterday. This would have been the exact time that I would have been driving through the area. Chalk one up to the wife's paranoia.

So I just showed up at the Mariot and it looks like the Indiana farm Beauro (SP???) has taken over everything un till 11. Are we still planning on starting at 10:30?

Bryan said to meet around 10 am. Outside the area. It's by the pool ballrooms A and B I think. We will be over in about 15-20 mins.

I talked to my ex last night, who lives in Dayton, and all of the highways were closed in Dayton last night, so you would have been stuck there no matter what.

The tournament was a great time, and I think everybody had a good time. I will be putting together a better post about it later...but for now I need to take a breath and RELAX a bit. :)

See you all at GenCon I hope!

The people that backed out you missed a great time. The Chicago group had a blast and would like to do that again!

*whew* after reading the last page, I'm glad my event is in May...sounds like the weather was a massive bummer....

CHern

We went down on Friday and in the moring walked to the Con in about 3 inches os snow. After that nothing, the roads were clear on the way back up to :D

Our group (the Omaha area group) had a blast, it was a great time. We are definitely looking forward to another one.

I am glad that everyone had a good time. I am sorry that I missed it but with everything that I have looked at I am glad that I did not make the trip.

I know that Brian will post an update but how many showed? With what fleets? Who won what??

From what I saw on the weather channel I would not have made the trip from PA either.Where we came from there wasn't too much snow, mostly just around Indianapolis.

The fleets that were there(from my memory)

Omaha group(my group)
Minbari
ISA-No allies
Centauri
Dilgar

Other groups
2-ISA w/Gaim allies
2-Abbai
2 more Centauri
Vree
Psi-Corp
2-Narn

Kosh 127 won the tournament with his ISA w/Gaim allies. I played him in the first game. He was alot of fun to play against, along with all the Chicago group.

I might have missed something, so anybody else feel free to correct.

we from the Chicago group all agrred that the group from Omaha were a great group of guys that were a blast to play. We hope that one day we can have another go!

it was a ton of fun to be able to meet you guys and play some games against some other people. (even if those people i played against couldnt roll a bad dice at all)

i honestly didnt think that the minbari could lose so bad. it didnt help when the people i played against couldnt miss a stealth roll, combined with the fact that i couldnt hit anything at all.

Guys, I was bummed the whole weekend about not getting to come, ask my wife, she got tired of hearing about it.

Maybe we can talk Bry into having another tourney before Gen Con, maybe in Cincinati or something.

So let's hear all the stories.

I was one of the Abbai players. The dice gods disliked me. I don't have details but I remember the highlights.

Game 1: Planetfall
I played against one of the Centauri fleets. I missed about 5 or 6 3+ stealth rolls, which managed to neutrailize my shooting for 2 turns. I had gotten one troop on the planet to hold it, but my opponent drop 1 troop and took mine out. His dice were doing well, my dice weren't.
VP: 5-55 Admiral Points 0-22

Game 2: Assasination
I ended up paired against Brian M from Lafayette, who I played the same mission against last week. My dice again betrayed me. I chose defender, as it worked out well last week also. Twice his Narn 4 AD beams got about 9-10 hits. I don't remember the VP, but the score came out 3-17.

Game 3: Annihilation
I went up against the one the ISA's with Gaim allies. My dice were probably rolling closer to average here. I think the funniest part of this match was using my beams to cut through about 5 bases of fighters. I had heavy losses, and had a hard time taking out anything worthwhile. Score came to 3-17.

I ended up having the best sportsmanship score, which surprised me. Never had people rate my sportsmanship that high.

My fleet:
Lakara
Bimith x2
Milani
Tiraca x4
Bisaria
Shyarie

Yeah, those stupid Etch-A-Sketch beams were a pain to experience...

I've got to say, I wasn't surprised that my fleet appearance score was so low, being the only unpainted fleet out there...
But enough to knock me to rank 11 of 14?

Game 1 Planetfall:
Up against the Psi Corps and I gotta say, I'm suprised so many people don't like to face them. Easiest game all day for my ISA with Gaim allies (only diff between my fleet and Kosh's was I traded 2 Blue Stars for the ISAS Monkey King (Liandra)). On the other hand, neither of us had any luck with our beams and I won by virtue of killing his Marathon flagship with Molecular Pulsars on Turn 2 versus him squishing a Blue Star with 10 Beam hits from 2 Motherships. Oh, and he flew one of his scouts into an asteroid field and it died. Neither of us even tried to land on the planet due to ships not being well suited to the task...
VP: 25-3 Me. Admiralty: 17-3

Game 2 Assassination:
Went up against the only ISA fleet without Gaim allies. Klikkittas as interceptors are the best way to use the bastards. Hands down. I dodged his beams and intercepted his pulsars, and he couldn't do the same.
Oh, and I managed to capture a Blue Star. The games were too short to give my Breaching Pods any time to do anything. Usually ended the turn after I launched them.
VP: I'm either misremembering or I added them up wrong on Saturday.
Admiralty: 17-3

Game 3 Annihilation:
Stupid Abbai deployed their experimental Etch-A-Sketch weapon-control systems. I couldn't keep my fighters safe.
Got stupid and went after the wrong flank of his fleet, so I missed out on killing his flagship and jst took a Bimith and 3 or 4 patrol hulls and something else for the loss of a BS.
VP: 23-3 Admiralty: 17-3

Then Enalut and I played a couple games after the tournament. His 3rd place tournament Narn vs my 11th place ISA/Gaim. Lesson learned: Narn need more Emines vs ISA. 1 doesn't cut it. You only get to fire on them once.
And then we went to 5 pt Battle, ISA vs Minbari. Lesson: Definitely need to "...get as close as you can and engage those [Tinashi] at point-blank range...!" Pulled it off, but due to taking 16 flights of T-Bolts as Patrol choices, the game was 3 apart without finishing completely. So we didn't count the crippled Raid level Tinashi variant as being kill, or the 2 fled Tinashi and the 1 fled raid variant for those VPs. IOW: T-Bolts rocks against Minbari. Don't buy them as separate options.

Oh, and the weather wasn't great, driving from Altoona, PA to MaveCon via Cleveland, but I've been through worse.
What I haven't been through worse was the roads. Ohio took too long to get plows out and had too few of them for the job. PA may not be able to maintain their highways, but at least the road you pay to drive on is kept clear no matter the weather...

I've got to say, I wasn't surprised that my fleet appearance score was so low, being the only unpainted fleet out there...
But enough to knock me to rank 11 of 14?

Your appearance score had nothing to do with your rankings...and when I told you 11th I was kind of guessing. My score sheet was already closed and I was just trying to remember. :) I'm going to post the final tallies today. :)

His 3rd place tournament Narn vs my 11th place ISA/Gaim.

He was actually a very close 2nd place, and I'm still not sure about you being 11th...we'll see later today. :)

All in all it was a really good day. I had a few comments during the tournament that shows that the tournament pack needs a little adjustment (but not much) before GenCon, and a few e-mails and comments after the tournament that raises some important topics for me to think about.

I am VERY happy with how the scoring and such went down. It really showed to me that the system works and that people are rewarded not only for their hard and skillful playing styles, but also for putting together fair fleets and playing fun games.

From what I have seen and heard, If I have any suggestions to the players and potential players for GenCon; these would be them:

1> Make sure your opponent knows EXACTLY what you are rolling and why BEFORE you roll the dice.
2> Measuring ranges is one thing, but marking a table with dice and counters for enemy firing arcs, potential turning radii and the like just slows the game down and rings of rules abuse
3> If you have counters in your fleet at all (even if it is just for a few minor things) please place them out with your fleet for judging - they are a part of what you are bringing to the table
4> Even if you are playing the toughest and most uphill game in your life, play it with a smile and it will reflect in your Sportsmanship score
5> Play to the scenarios; just smashing your opponent is fun - but might not win you the match
6> Sometimes bringing the fleet that "everybody is talking about online" can hurt your Composition score; as your fellow players are who are judging you
7> Don't take back moves if you can help it; not only does it slow the game down but it also leaves room for misinterpretations of distance and rules lawyering
8> Unless your ship has SM in its turns listing, measure your moves and turns to a certain degree; just moving a ship because you "know it can get there" makes some players fussy
9> No matter how tough a scenario looks to your fleet selection, play it out; the results might surprise you
and 10> Running tournaments is stressful. Please be aware that the judge is going to be a scatter-brained stressball at these things, and can make momentary mistakes. Hopefully it will be minor, but if it is not, trust him to fix the situation as quickly as possible.

Hope everybody had a good time, and I can't wait to see you guys at GenCon!!!

Cheers all,
Bry
