Making bases for your ships

Mongoose
After working with miniatures for a long time I have come to hate the "little plastic stands of DOOM!" as I refer to them.

Anyway, how do others out there base and stand there minis?

With the plastic stands of doom. I thought about knocking up a base using a nail for my Octurion but I don't think I'll need to. I'll just use a long pin on the plastic stand of doom...

I use nails. After filing out the hole in the plastic base to fit the nail, I cut the nail down with a dremel using a cutting wheel. Then drill out the model with the appropriate drill bit. Because the nail head will not be flush with the bottom of the plastic base I use a fender washer the same size as the plastic base. This gives the model more stability and allows the nail head to be recessed and the bottom of the base sits flat on the gaming table. I have yet to have a model break off of these. Also relatively cheap, which for me is a great thing. Painted black and you can't tell what they are made of. Hope this helps.

Large guage brass rod. Works well on the larger minis, some of the smaller ones not pretty bu it still works. Metal bases from Mongoose. I' Waiting on 60 and 25mm magnetic bases for GFI to glue to the metal ones, a touch wider and should make it even more stable

Plastic stands of doom with magnetic tops so the ships aren't permanently attached, and I need a lot fewer bases, and I have a lot of spares ;)

Standard plastic bases, though varying the hieght of the stand if the model is particularly heavy or tall. If it's a heavy or ungainly model then I'll pin the model to the base with a length of brass rod; and drilling into those plastic stands isn't exactly a walk in the park.

I've started using standard Mongoose bases with Ninjamagic adaptors. They are... magic. :)

Nice. How much do they tend to hit you for shipping to the UK though?

I ordered 20 and got charged $5.05 for airmail postage. They came pretty quickly too.

I've just ordered some more but he is waiting for stock.
