Magazine/Power Pack mass?

Dirk Desiato

Mongoose
I have looked through the Core Rulebook and I can't find the mass (kg) for spare weapon magazines and power packs. Did I miss it or is it not there?

On page 86 it does say that if an item's mass or cost is not listed, then its mass or cost is negligible.

Now having said that, I agree that ammo should have some mass and I could not find it either.

Hmm. On page 100 it says that the Laser Rifle is powered by a heavy backpack (just like in other forms of Traveller).

Yep, somethings a miss here. :?

Some assumptions i make that may or may not be true:
- Weapon mass includes a full magazine
- weapon mass includes any backpack, belt or wrist mounted power source

Spare ammo: If you are talking about spare, as in one reload, it is fairly negligible. For example, an autopistol has a mass of 0.5 so the ammo, to me, would be a bit less and negligible.

power pack weight: Even if you agree with my assumption, there should still be a way to subtract the weight of the power pack since some of the weapons, like the Laser Rifle, specifically describe limited usage without the backpack. Also there may be times when a power pack is carried such as to resupply the front lines, and weight is needed for determining encumbrance. I agree that at least the backpacks should have mass even if the belt and wrist power supplies are negligible.

This is problematic with some weapons; for example, the Autopistol weights 500gr, which is quite realistic for an unloaded pistol but seems very light for a loaded one, especially with the relatively large magazine it has.

Pretty major oversight...all of a sudden the ACR from LBB4 that weighs 4kg with a loaded magazine is only 3kg according to MongTrav p99 chart. The LBB4 3kg loaded Accelerator Rifle is down to 2kg.

Yet the 3.9kg loaded LBB4 Gauss Rifle is up to 4kg in MongTrav?? As is the 3.33kg LBB4 Assault Rifle, which now becomes 4kg.

I'm confused...

But if you are talking about a trooper who is loaded with an additional six magazines, should that still be called "negligible'? Or the assistant gunner who is also loaded up with additional 100 round belts etc?

I realise it is a small thing, but it is still something I think is reasonable to ask about.

There are many details in the game that are left up to the GM.

The GM can approximate, or if it is something they may use often, do a little research and document it (and share it!)

It would be nice if Mongoose would at least tell us here if the mass given is for just the weapon or the weapon with one magazine of ammo.....

Usually they are good about reading the forums and answering questions....

Already done.

But if they had meant to offer them and it just was missed I would be curious what they had vs what I figure to do.

I agree, they are and so I expect we will find out one way or the other what they meant to do before long.

Until then, GM's rules. 8)
