Lankhmar - What do I need

All-
I am very interested in the Lankhmar setting for roleplaying (I was a huge fan of both the books and the TSR setting for 1st edition D&D). I am not overly fond of getting into a new roleplaying sysetm but I will in order to run games in Lankhmar.

So what of the Runequest line would I have to purchase in order to play the Lankhmar campaign setting?

Does anyone know?

You'd basically just need the RuneQuest basic rules and the Lankhmar sourcebook. But I'd strongly advice you to get a RuneQuest Companion as well. With those three books you should be good to go. Maybe the forthcoming Lankhmar titels "Newhon" and "Swords against Sorcery" (see Mongoose's main page) would be good aditions as well. :)

Hope this helps...

Gimme a moment please :-)

RuneQuest started off with three basic gaming titles:

RuneQuest (being the main rulebook)

The RuneQuest Companion (a very handy supplemental)

RuneQuest Monsters (you name it!)

If you intend to run only RuneQuest Lankhmar, you would only need the first two of the mentioned titles. Although I have to say that of all MGP RQ books, I like Monsters the most! If you are starting RuneQuest, get those three basic titles. In the order I listed them above.

You'd definately would need the Lankhmar book.
As the Lakhmar book itselfs contains a lot of info on the process to create a character in that setting, you might try your hands on the Lankhmar book alone to see if you like the flair and setting that Aaron Demski-Bowden set up and use the freely available System Reference Document (SRD) for the RuneQuest RPG. Just to see if the system is interesting enough for you before you chip in too much money.

I personally know of one player that ordered MGPs Lankhmar book only to convert it to his new D&D campaign. Although I don't know what has become of that project by now...

Plus the forthcoming books of the Lankhmar series (see www.MongoosePublishing.com the NEWS section) for more details.

Hope this cleares things up a bit.

If you want to know more, ask away, but I'll be away from the machine for a while, gotta go with the dog :-)

Thanks for all the information.

I have always been a huge fan of the Dark Fantasy/City based campaigns (hence Lankhmar as well as Thieves' World!).

I just ordered the main RuneQuest book and the Lankhmar settting book.

Thanks again for all the help.

Cheers!

You can get the Companion as an SRD, and its really only needed for the magic, which is not common PC material in Lankhmar anyways.

Bridgetsdad, you are more than welcome.

That's a very good point, weasel_fierce makes there. I'm kind of at a loss to explain, why it didn't come to my mind, to provide a link for the Companion SRD as well. You should most likely be fine, just using those.

They can be downloaded for free right here

Have a lot of fun with RuneQuest and the Lankhmar stuff :-)

Edit: To make this more complete: Monsters SRD

But if you get earnestly into gaming with RuneQuest use the SRD as a help and get yourself a copy of the most wonderful sourcebook itself!!!
