L.O.N.A.W Ship Naming

Star-Lynx

Mongoose
Hi all

I'm just about to start a campaign and I need to name my League ships in the fleet to add character. Any ideas or tips on the naming would be helpful. :D

My League of Non-Aligned Worlds fleet consists of Mostly Vree and Pak'ma'ra with a few Brakiri and Abbai thrown into the mix.

First thing to think about is whether you want the ships in their langhuages, in which case your in for a struggle, or whether you want an English translation for them. In the case of the later think about the race their from and their battle field role. Pak'ma'ra are a difficult one as most of their ships are salvaged hulls anyway, so their scavenger nature makes it difficult to figure out names, the Vree don't speak English and (at least in the role play game can't learn it) as such their names might be very abstract concepts once translated, or maybe a simple numerical series; Xorr-395/2, Xorr-9901/3, etc. As for the Abbai and Brakiri, for the Abbai try things like Negotiator, Peace Keeper, Defender, Watcher and such like, and for the Brakiri try economically or buisness related names like the Entrepenure, Banker.

Hopefully this has been of some help, and hopefully others can add to it, but basically think about the race and what defines them and what their driving force is.

I really think the Brakiri warships would have, you know, warship-style names. They might be a race with a government based on corporations rather than traditional human forms, but they're still military forces. They're just privately owned and operated "corporate security" forces. Think of them as the ultimate in mercenary forces on permanent retainer - a proper military with a rank structure and heirarchy, working for corporate goals.

Abbai aren't corporate-based, the Brakiri are.

for brakiri names, come up with your won names, using these for a basis:

Im-rehsa
Ak Habil
Ly-nakir
Pri-wakat

Alot of these names have generally arabic-sounding names.

I like the idea of binary for the Vree, very nice touch. As for the comment of the Brakiri being effectively 'rented' from private owners, that would open up the naming convention to everything and anything; whose to say a sentimental Captain or owner hasn't named one after his wife or favourite pet.

lol.

I actually loked at ferengiish names for the brakiri because of the corporations and such and have a bit of a laugh

Aquisition
fiscal fury
force majeure
severance
poisoned profit
insolvency

That's pretty much what I did too, but used the names of Egyptian gods as a basis and altered them a bit.

The LONAW source book for the RPG gives a few examples of character names for the various races, which could give you an idea of how the race's language looks if you want to name them in their native tongue.

For the Vree, you could always use pictures of crop circles :)

I'm so going to do that when I get a Vree fleet.

Or you could use the famous conspiracy abuductees like Elvis (playing live in a a Brivoki near you!).

Might steal that one for my Corumai. Once it's delivered. :(

your poor postman is probably on 3 months sick recovering from the hernia he got trying to lift the thing!

for vree use symbols. just do a combination of triangles, circles, squares etc and change the combination on differant ships.

that will be mine with all the MI demo points I have spent

must admit i took the easy way out on the vree, i tried binary, crop circle/triangles etc but found them a bit difficult in the heat of battle, soooo
i put one direction line facing forward on each type, vaarl xorr, etc in a different colour then i can keep tabs on their facing as well as the ship

I was only kidding (referencing the "Grail" episode"), but I suppose you could always number the bases as well for easy identification.
