Kotha Penal Wings

"For crimes against sentient beings so heinous that I cannot bring myself to repeat them in public, we sentence you to two battles flying a Kotha Medium Fighter."

"NOOOOOOO!!!"

Seriously, is there any reason for these things other than giving the Abbai a way to get rid of unwanted prisoners without actually having to execute them?

Nice catch

Though I think that the Abbai would not do that even to their crimninals - I was guessing stupidly well paid mercanaires (and probably ones hoping that they would never have to fight?)

I prefer the idea that they are actually drones.............. :) .

Well I suppose they can gang up on Shadow fighters ............ :)

if they were hull 6 they would fit abbai thinking with being very hard to kill. they are even slower than the carrier (milani)

I would normally agree with the Abbai ship building mentality but it is not supported by their ship stats.

Kotha needs to fill a role, right now it doesn't fill any role.

Anti-fighter escort - too slow for the role, the fleet has to all power too often to get range even if the skirmish and lower ships didn't out run it. Add in no dogfight bonus, no af and no access to fleet carrier and might as well use breeching pods.

Anti-ship escort (interceptor duty) - can't do because of the weak gun, should never have gone up in dice, should have lost weak.

Anti-ship strike - too slow, too short of range and too few weak dice to matter.

I understand they wanted it to be a bad fighter, but they needed to decide what it was doing and at least make it adequate to one of the roles.

Under it's current stats it's best use is as a place to loan AF dice from the bimith or brisaria. Put a few on anti-fighter escort on your slowest ships and loan them AF dice when bombers attack.

It wouldn't be so bad if the Milani had carrier 2, then you could get all the fighters out on turn one with a scramble, or if more were carried on the slower ships. As is, your often better off not even launching them. Another race I just find myself wondering what the envisioned style was.

I feel like ive said before they just need t drop their AD to 1 and take away the weak. I feel that this would soolve the fleets problem as you know have inteceptors.

Okay, what job does it do better if the kotha is hull 6? Why would you take more of them?

attacking ships (well surviving fire) but Abbai philosophy (shields etc) should dictate increasing the survivability of pilots anyway

the Abbai as a whole need a rethink IMO

I agree... whatever they were designed to do just didn't come through...

- on the Kotha I agree, shields and/or af would have been my chosen fix rather than high hull. Just because Abbai have no special hull levels in their ships. I talked to DaBoss about the idea that they would never have allowed their own to be out in fighters so poorly constructed, or even allowed mercenaries to die in something so bad.

Yep I liked it - drones seemed a much more sensible option :)
I have to admit that I was thinking of them as drones as well.

It's just that the idea of the Kotha being the ultimate Abbai punishment tickled my fancy and got the idea across better

In the old B5W background Kothas had shields, were reasonably fast and decently armoured. The gun was still a joke. But there were also very few Abbai carriers, and they didn't always carry full fighter complements. The Abbai also used mercenaries, either well paid Balosian mercs, or Gaim drones (which were completely expendable from the Gaim point of view). The suckiness of the Abbai fighter is one reason Abbai had anti-fighter warships in B5W. Also before the Dilgar arrived on the scene the Abbai had never had an enemy with heavy, well armed and survivable fighters. After they just built a few more carriers and a lot more escorts.

Yeah... I didn't want to bring up the old B5Wars stats as there seems to be an allergy among the playtesters to the mention of them.

But it was a solid if inoffensive fighter in the old days. I just could not understand the weapon upgrade rather than survival upgrade. The fact that it didn't get a shield (give they had the precedent with the shadow) stunned me.

The did use mercs... but I thought they used whole merc ships, not just fighter pilots. Even the current abbai fluff mentioned the use of hired raider fleets. Goes back to that whole Abbai are not really pacifists, just want to give you every chance to accede to their wisdom before they tan your hide. A bit like my great grandma on moms side.

Hardly.
Look at the stats for the Maximus which we pushed for as an example of looking back to B5 Wars

May have been some of the old guard then... I remember being rounding shouted down by folks during the Arm. debates for even mentioning the game.
