Perhaps it spent some time in a cloud of some sort that either allowed the hull to react or more likely just stained it. For example, orbiting in a low density ring still meant that over time a lot of particles impacted the hull and left stains.
Alternatively perhaps it leaks fluids and/or gasses and these stain the hull.
I quite like reminding people that there should be science in science fiction so I like the opportunity to be able to tell someone that queries it that "rusty" is just a name and the dirty red marks are actually stains because the (not literal) rust bucket loses 3% of its coolant into space each year and some of them gets deposited back on to the hull. Not only making it look rusty but making hull operations more dangerous than they need to be. A more professional operator would clean the hull, or at least fix the coolant leaks. The fact they neither has been done tells you a lot about "Rusted" Fang.

If it was a little bit leaky, and some of the atmosphere was leaking out, wouldn't the O2 in that rust the hull?
