Is mongoose going to try and get the Star Wars rpg liscense?

Mongoose
Well? Could this be the grail?

Only thing against it is the liscensing cost which is said to be hideously expensive. But mongoose seems like a p. profitable company.

It would be a nice dream....but I doubt it.

Well, not for a 2010 release anyway. I do reckon that Mongoose ought to find another big license for next year though - for either Traveller or RuneQuest.

With Conan in the loop, as it were, they will want something that can make a splash - Star Trek or Star Wars or Dune, or something on that level would do that.

Well, we have been looking into it, I cannot deny :)

At this time, I do not think it likely, mainly because of the time constraints that Lucasfilm insist on working to. Our plans for the game would be much larger than 'just' an RPG, and those constraints are punishing.

Don't hold your breath, in other words.

Very interesting. I hope you get the license and do something amazing with it. :D

However, out of curiosity what else were you thinking of doing with it besides an rpg? Also, can't you get the license to just do an rpg? Thats what many people would be interested in.

Hehe, I had guessed they would try :)

They have resources that they wanted to allocate to Conan and cannot put there any more. They have a brand new combat system that is screaming "Please use me for lightsabre duels". They have reputation for doing successful games and supporting them. It was an obvious move.

Too bad the thing is unlikely. It could be a great game.

I seem to recall you mentioning something about this one time.

Though it wasn't rpg based, more mini based IIRC.

Although, seeing a return of D6 SW would be excellent.

A Star Wars wargame would be a licence to print money, but the miniatures development and licence fees would be huge upfront costs. It'd be like GW with LOTR. Huge hump of revenue then diminishing returns as all the popular stuff is done (though with the bonus of a constant release of new comics/novels/other stuff that LOTR and B5 didn't get).

It'd be a huge risk for the development, but I'd love to see someone actually do a Star Wars wargame before I turn into an old fart and Star Wars is 'that old people film'.

Being a long time SWM player....from the posts on the official forums..if Mongoose got the deal and focused on the figures that WotC couldn't or didn't produce, they'd make a killing. Especially if they kept the figures in the same scale.

That's one of our worries is that whoever picks up the liscene will decide to make a whole new scale, invalidating our exsisting figures.

They are GW heroic scale height, but with far more realistic proportions. It isn't that hard a scale to copy, but if someone does take over and produce a wargame, they may well want to change the scale to make sure people don't carry over their collections to the new game. My collection isn't that large, so it wouldn't bother me too much as long as they weren't charging ridiculous amounts for basic troops.

The thing is if there is a wargame, it'll focus on the figures people want tons of, like stormtroopers and vehicles, and not on characters. There won't be every member of the Jedi Council and 10 different Darth Vaders etc etc etc.

Just a question? Could you keep us appraised on your negotiations with lucas (Arts/film!) in your quest to get the star wars rpg, please mr sprange.

"Help us Mr Sprange, you're our only hope!"

I am afraid we cannot do that. However, if we succeed, just stick your head out of the window - wherever you are in the world, you'll likely hear the cries from Mongoose HQ. . .

There are far too many good licences sitting out there doing nothing. Decipher has the rights to Star Trek and LotR rpg's and they're just sitting there rotting (except for the Original show which Steve Jackson Games is using). Last Unicorn Games had Dune but when WotC bought up those rights they just killed it.

Is it really useful, or even financially sensible, for these companies to hold onto rights that they have no intention of using?

Decipher does not have LotR's or Star Trek and hasn't since around their embezzlement problem. Cubicle 7 has the LotRs license now and the new One Ring RPG is being made as we speak. Also that is not the Original Series that Gurps is using it is the Star Fleet Universe (Prime Directive) which is a parallel universe and completely different license than normal Star Trek canon.

Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't heard of Decipher's problem; the last time I went to their site the LotR link went to a fansite.

Do you know if anyone has snatched up the Star Trek license yet?

Your welcome and no I have no idea if anyone has been trying for the Star Trek license.

I've been trying some online searches for any info on star Trek Rpg licences, and for all my searches i've only found out a small amount.

Star Trek rpg licences are currently OPEN, as in noboby has them yet, a small article on star trek.com back when the new trek film came out mentioned that J.J Abrahms is a fan of roleplaying, and wants to see an rpg, based on that Alternate Timline Abrahms Trek. So Paramount/CBS? seems to be pushing for Abrahms trek. No info as yet on normal trek.

This is based on differring pieces of news from either paramount or star trek.com, so i'll keep digging the net for more info.

Does anyone know JJ Abrahms e-mail address, then it will be just a matter of asking him. Certainly will be a lot quicker than trawling the net for tidbits of info.
