On the sample ship stats damage is shown as two numbers separated by a slash (/) I take it this is from VaS and the "crippled" figure ??and what happens when it is reached (Other than the Morale effect)?

If the idea is for readers to make up stats for ships:

How do you determine the crippled value ?

How do you determine target value ?

Speed, How do Knots equate to inches ? (ref +/- 5 knots and total speed)

Can you explain the 2W for wood armour ?

What determines W,VW,AP,SAP etc ?


Of course If you are going to supply all data for ships, then just use the crippled query at the top and the speed question.

A new version has just been posted which answers many of the questions. It doesn't cover the way to determine SAP, AP etc. as thats on a file on my other PC which isn't working at the moment. However, the tables in the rules as they are now should cover all generic gun types. I ahve stats for about 50 vessels so far but agsin they are on the other PC :(
 
I am in the process of laying out an ACW variant of VaS which will likely be released as a PDF only set. Thought you guys might like to know that.
 
No, strictly ACW actions. I like the look of your napoelonic ideas, btw. I'm a big fan of Napoleonic naval and i've been nagging Matthew already about doing a full set of rules for Age of Sail actions.

The latest version of my variant has some stuff on rivers that I developed from I&F. I'll aim to post it soon. Might be some useful ideas in there.

Have you done a basic layout of an AoS set in preparation ??
 
Matt asked me to have a look at this. The result was I think was considrered a bit too complex. Still, it seemed a shame to waste it, hence its posted on my website.
 
The VAS model doesn't really work too well for ancient galleys. Besides, there are plenty of rules, both commercial and freebie, out there that cover the period.

DM did a set of ancient galley rules (Corvus Belli) published free in Wargames Illustrated (219 & 220)

I have updated the file on the website. The ship data has been extended somewhat, so there are now over 160 ship types and a few variant armament fits to play with :)

Quick queries
1, On the last page of the confederate vessels there are some with no armament listed, eg Hornet Sorpion Squib & wasp. A D Vance. Banshee. Lizzie. Hope. Is this because they were unarmed or information is not known
2, For a barge, what armament should/can be mounted
 
The unarmed ones are blockade runners. I need to break the tables up a bit more to give some better differntiation between types. Some of my most entertaining games have been between US blockading squadrons and Confederate coastal ironclads attempting to allow a blockade runner to get home or escape from a Southern port.

Ok Let us know when you redefine the tables. I fancy a blockade run try at some stage

Any ideas on the barges ?
 
Barges tended to be unarmed. They are there to give you targets to shoot up (I'll be adding tugs sometime soon which can tow them about). They were widely used on the rivers in addition to normal riverboats.
