Iron Wind Metals Babylon 5 license to expire at the end of June 2009
Submitted by Mike Noe on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 2:31pm.

Earlier this year, Iron Wind Metals licensed the Babylon 5 miniatures line from Mongoose Games. After several months of prep, we began re-releasing this fantastic line of classic Sci-Fi space ships. Eventually, we planned to over-haul most of the existing designs. We began officially “re-releasing” these re-mastered ships in October. We have invested a good bit of time and effort into the line to date, hoping that the Babylon 5 miniatures license would be a long-time deal...

Unfortunately, a few days ago we were informed that, for various reasons, Mongoose Games has opted not to renew their Babylon 5 contract with Warner Brothers. As our license is tied in with Mongoose, when their license expires, ours does as well.

This is a possibility that we had known existed, as Mongoose was very up-front about things from the start, however we had hoped that circumstances would allow them to renew. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case. We discussed picking up the license ourselves, but for many reasons this will most likely not be possible either.

Therefore, as it stands we will be forced to cease production of the Babylon 5 miniatures at the end of June 2009.

If this situation changes we will let everyone know - however, at this point that seems unlikely.

During the 6 ½ months that we have left, however, we intend to continue to re-master and re-issue as many designs as we can, and to try and get as many designs as possible available to the players, including the Fleet Action scale ships.

ah well thats pretty clear :(

also now we know the date of expiry - June 2009..............

all very sad..........

thanks Bubba for letting us know.

I hope that they do keep selling until June 2009. Some of us have only just started getting our first fleet together! :(
Bad news at Christmas time (low funds) is not good.

TT.

At least they will sell Fleet Action minis. So I can get some of the not upscaled vessels like the Leskrati.

I'm glad that Mongoose was up-front with them regarding the license renewal.

If we hadn't, we could be in some very deep legal trouble!!!

Seriously, it is just good business to let your partners know what is going on.

So this is it then? The miniature production will just die again? :(

We do have like 6 or so months, but U$ exchange rate is so high here.. Ordering ships right now will get me killed

For UK people wanting to buy miniatures:
Other International orders
Orders up to $50.00 - shipping and handling is $18.00
Orders from $50.01 to $100.00 - shipping and handling is $24.00
Orders from $100.01 to $150.00 - shipping and handling is $28.00
Orders from $150.01 to $200.00 - shipping and handling is $34.00
Orders from $200.01 to $250.00 - shipping and handling is $38.00
Orders from $250.01 and over - shipping and handling is FREE
Who fancies clubbing together to make a bulk order, saving the international shipping fee, then just paying the models' price plus cost of UK shipping to whoever actually places the order?

And if people do want to do this, who volunteers to place the order? (I'll do it if nobody else will. :))

If someone was willing to act as the middleman, we would be willing to ship all models in such an order to the UK ourselves, and then distribute them (freely) from our office.

Someone would need to keep a list of who has what, and we would need to work out something on the payment side - but this would save a few more pennies in postage charges across the UK (and beyond?).

Could you not simply open up the online store again for a fixed period, adjust the prices to match IWM, and then do a bulk order for whatever comes through.

You would guarantee that you got the money from everyone, since they would have to pay through your store and then you just buy it in a big order direct from IWM.

having put together for a bulk order from GW from the UK, I can tell you that large orders like this get noticed by customs. fees please!

Tis true - virtually every order I have made from the US has been taxed - plus extra costs fro the privelage of collecting etc.

I'd probaby rather it was charged in the first place when it was bought as it wouldn't take 6 months to get to me (which is what happened with one shipment of Ninja Magic things) and I could figure out the real price.

annoying thing is they put VAT on the total cost, including the postage but expect you to collect from the depot. not only have they increased the damn postage they wont deliver

Strange - here in my part of sunny Scotland provided I keep the overall value below about £65 - 70 never get hit for duty. Even above £70 its hit and miss and most often miss.

Had three US deliveries over £150 in the last 3 months all of which never got hit for duty.

Also of course depends on what the paperwork declares the goods as. (Only time I am happy to see "toys" in connection with on the "lead").

Next strange thing is, even when I get hit with duty, when I pay on line, they home deliver, usually quoting a day. Although I think if I miss that delivery I have to pick up from the depot, (never happened yet).
