Injuries during Traveller Creation

Are injuries sustained during creation permanent reductions in characteristics? The book doesn’t say what happens if a player chooses not to pay the medical expenses (or if forgoing is even optional)?

That feels like something which would be up to individual refs to decide at their table. I would think it’s an option to skip the medical payments even though it’s not specifically stated in the rules.

I think medical debt is meant to provide plot hooks for the start of a campaign - you can’t afford the gear you want/need due to paying off the debt, or you have a debt collector on your tail for defaulting.

I can totally see players willing to forego paying to restore characteristics, probably with the hope of acquiring augments later.

I could see that, plus the added story of why the traveller lost their limb or eye for some of the injury results. I just wasn’t sure if it was normal “heals in a day like normal damage” damage using the healing rules in the combat chapter or if it’s a reduction of your permanent value… the permanent makes sense since you typically acquire the injury over a 4 year period…

Yeah, it’s a little unclear but I’ve always read it as permanent damage. Definitely backstory material there.

My take is that it depends on how the dungeon master and the player want to handle it.

I tend to see it as more of a cost benefit question; do you want to spend the time and appeal to the goddess of luck to create a better character, or accept the current one with it's liabilities, that either needs more maintenance, or could have acquired enough resources in the future, to remove those liabilities.

Originally, it was sudden death.
