initiative sinks

Boresight has made the current system necessary. If they had a special order to 'save a turn' to orient on a designated target or something you could change the system to make swarmers less of an issue and more of a strategy.

This relates a little to initiative sinks. In 2nd Ed when a ship is hit with a running adrift it now moves durning the end phase, since it does a compulsory movement can it still count as an initiative sink during the movement phase or does it have to do a special action to count as an initiative sink? and if a ship is incapable of doing a special action (running adrift, No SA) can it count as an initiative sink?

Yes, it can still be declared as not taking a special action, therefore counting as a sink.

I would think it can still be declared even if it has a no SA crit.

A possible change to boresights could make a new initiative system possible.

Maybe a small angle, less than 90 degrees, but more than the 0 we get now. 30-45?

I think the even 30 degrees would be too much, and smaller arcs would be too small to easily gauge by eye. I do agree that an arc would make sense for boresights, but it would be in the realm of 1-5 degrees, which would limit it pretty much to computerised versions of the game.

frankly the easiest solution I would say would be, make base sises standard and make boresights line up to the base.....

Frankly I think an official base size would be a damn good idea anyway. Its not that big a deal for those who have ships on hex stands and the like (as I do) as I can always just make some card circles and stick them (even temporarily with blue-tac) to the base of my ships. Its already something of an issue with the way fighters work now (sitting on bases to escort, ignoring stealth if in base contact and so on)

Well a small arc of 5 degress would be a boresight xl. Not enough to make a new ini system, as it wouldnt cover enough area for most vessels to stay within that arc.

The base size idea is really nice though. As long as it isnt that tiny base ^^.

how would you measure an angle of 5 degrees?
As I stated, it would be impractical for model gaming. A computer would find it easy enough to do though, so for things like vassel it would be practical (It's something I've been considering as a possible programming project).
The main point though is that anything more that that I just wouldn't really consider boresight anymore, so it becomes a question of "shall we get rid of boresight altogether so that we can change the initiative system".

I find that boresight works best with swarm fleets. (so many ships pointing in so many directions)
but that brings us back to a contentious issue.

My laser tape measure has settled many an arc dispute already. It'd be fairly simple to attack a protractor to the top of it

This is the one you want ;)

 And to think that I used to avoid laser measures because they used to have a minimum reliable length of about 6" I think

I'm now wanting to play against Burger at a tournament just to see him whip that thing out
Alas, this is where computers still have the advantage - you don't immediately assume that a computer's out to be an ass when it's just being accurate. You trust the computer. The computer is your friend. This is... wrong gaming system?

 I generally don't have that problem, but then, I play against mathameticians and a few obsesive compulsives.

 I've played the obsesive compulsives so often that sometimes I worry I may be developing it myself (don't believe me, I just spent a couple of minutes making sure obsesive compulsives was spelt correctly, and that I'd capitalised my 'I's)

Yer now that is the funny thing, without boresights there is no need for a new ini system ^^.

But boresights are so totally cool, i think they should be kept. Just maybe a different way of doing them? More like the WS which actually has a boresight, except that it is such an agile ship, that it is turned into an forward arced weapon.

Or something along that line. Something like an opening up of boresights. A perestroika of boresights :D.
