Informations on the Gaim

Mongoose
I would like to use the Gaim as the "Precursor" race of my homebrew
Traveller setting, if possible with material from the Babylon 5 - Travel-
ler book and the planned Babylon 5 supplement on the Gaim.

However, my knowledge about the Babylon 5 universe is unfortunate-
ly very limited, and to plan my campaign I would need some more in-
formations on the Gaim:

- Would it be plausible for Gaim (or a very Gaim-like species) to live in
hive-like subterranean settlements ?

- Would it be possible to have beetle-like warrior and worker Gaim and
wasp-like flying Gaim scouts ?

- Would it be possible for the Gaim (or a very Gaim-like species of my
universe) to have a highly developed bio-nanotechnology ?

Thank you very much for any answers. :D

In answer to your questions: yes, yes and possibly.

Of course you could always wait for the Gaim B5 sourcebook due out this month :D

I do indeed hold my breath, but unfortunately the characters of my cam-
paign will discover the first abandoned Precursor Hive very soon, before
the supplement will be published, and I would dislike to create too many
contradictions ...

Maybe they could find an abandoned or deserted hive.

Of course, their entrance into the hive sets off an alert message which brings real GAIM at a later date (say after the book comes out)...

Yep, this is almost exactly my evil plan.

There is already a good deal of Gaim information in the League of Non-Aligned Worlds sourcebook.

The Gaim do indeed have worker, warrior castes as well as queens. IIRC correctly, there is another caste, that includes scientists.

Gaim warriors are 10" tall insect monstrosities, that are the stuff of nightmare to other races. They can withstand the vaccuum of space.

There are six ruling queens. Although the ACTA wargame introduced lesser queens. All Gaim have a telapathic link with their Queen.

Outside of Queens, the only Gaim capable of independant thought are Erratics. Which are destroyed unless they prove useful.

The Gaim were able to very quickly adapt and 'evolve' an ambassador caste for contact with other species.

There is no reason they couldn't have winged scouts.

Part of Mongoose's B5 timeline has a brief EA/Gaim conflict - the 'Bug War'. The implication is that it was Starship Troopers in style.

Nano-tech doesn't really feature in B5, but the Gaim went from lacking spaceflight, to figuring out captured Dilgar ships, to a relatively powerful starfaring race in around 30 years.
