Ideas for Tournies

ok then, leading on from the Gaim are hard at raid discussions. is the best answer for a fair tourney, not to balance everyone at raid, but to change the way tournies are run. have you tried somethign different? had some differing ideas. What can be done to give everone a fair crack of the tourney whip?

I probably sound like a broken record now, but 1 pt Armageddon is great
At least, it was with the Armageddon FAP splitting. It doesn't work so well with 2e, fleets with PL holes or poor ships will be screwed over.

For example in 1e you could take 5 White Stars and 3 Blue Stars, or a Vorlon Light Cruiser, Transport, Destroyer and 3 flights of fighters, or a Shadow Hunter, 2 Scouts and 3 fighters. Those options have been (seemingly needlessly) excluded from 2e. There are other options for those fleets, sure, but removing choices is bad IMO. I still can't see a reason why this kind of FAP splitting was disallowed, or in fact why the FAP splitting was changed from Armageddon at all!

With the armageddon fleet breakdowns, I agree with you Burger, 1 Armageddon made interesting battles. With the 2nd ed breakdowns, it's not so interesting. I got hammered in a battle of 3rd Age EA vs ISA. I had a Command Omega, Omega, Avenger, and 2 Artemis. He had 4 WS and 4 WS2. it was ugly.

option 1: Campaign rules for selection. Can't use any ship more than once.
option 2: Players play 1 patrol game, one skirmish game, 1 raid....

Have players put together a pool of ships, 5 Battle for instance but the pool could be what ever pts and PL, and then let players build 5pt Raid fleets from that pool depending on what fleet their facing for that paticular game.

Limits total one-trick pony fleets, allows some flexibility in fleet structure depending on the opponent, and still games times down to a manageable level. Even a person with only a little experience could whip together a 5pt Raid fleet from 5 Battle PL worth of ships in a few minutes
