Got to add my two penneth, even though Ian and I have since had a conversation on the phone.
Ian was the geezer who gave me my break in the industry and taught me much of what I know about Indesign layout. We also had a bloody good laugh at Mongoose, and I have a lot of fond memories of working at the company, taking the p*ss, and being taken the p*ss out of.
The funniest thing for me was moving to a quiet village outside Swindon, and making friends with a guy who used to work alongside PC Barstow when he was a fine upstanding member of the Wiltshire Constabulary.
'You know what we used to call him?' asks my mate.
'No idea,' I reply.
"The Loon",' he says, laughing maniacally
That came as no surprise whatsoever!
The thing I'll miss the most is those Thursday night roleplay sessions, where we could burn and pillage to our heart's content: me with my ruthless methods of interrogation, and you with your bowling ball executions.
I think you know I mean this most sincerely when I say:
Up yours Barstow!

Truly hope I am not too late to post here. Way back in the long-forgotten days of 2007 I had the insane idea of writing for Mongoose. In particular, I thought I could take a stab at Signs and Portents Wargamer. Finding time in my schedule to scribble notes and finally type out the ideas running through my head, I dutifully submitted the ideas, fully expecting to be told not to bother anymore.
But to my surprise this rather polite gentleman named Ian answered my e-mail saying to go ahead and send in my scenarios. As happy as I was that day, I was even more so to find my name listed in the table of contents for S&PWG 45.
Ian was great, always answering my e-mails., always encouraging more submissions, always just plain great.
I was so inspired by this reception that I have since been in contact with a few other publishers about submitting ideas to them. The results have not been as encouraging as with Ian, but the have been positive and the confidence Ian helped me developed has me working on those new submissions, even though rejection could be waiting.
Thank you, Ian. Many years I sat and played games thinking how cool it would be to be even a small part of the creative process. You showed me it is very cool and it just takes the confidence and determination to take the risk. Riches may not be waiting for me, I think we all know that, but I am willing to take the chance now that I have had some success.
