I admit it, I'm a low level freak!

Wolf and I were talking about this the other day, and started asking ourselves what would happen if we tried the d20 Modern rules regarding Massive Damage tresholds; i.e. them being equal to Con.

That would have most Commoners having a Massive Damage threshold of 10! While PCs would average a bit higher. Perhaps this would simply lead to Con becoming much more important as an ability, but it would be kind of fun IMO. Worth a shot at least. :D

TTFN,

I'm still bent on trying this variant. Massive Damage Threshold = CON is a brilliant rule in my book. And it opens up to Feats like, Enhanced Threshold and so on... I like it.

Perhaps with this addition even Soldiers get to kill folks with one blow, and not only Thieves with their blasted Sneak Attacks? :P

If you are worried about Con becoming too important, how about... Massive Damage Threshold = 10 + 1/2(Con)

This means, with a Con of 10, your MDT = 15 and a damage roll of 16 would require you to make a DC 18 fort save at +0 to your roll.

This means, with a Con of 18, your MDT = 19 and a damage roll of 20 would require you to make a DC 20 fort save, at a +4 to your roll.

Just a thought...

Nah, I am a huge fan of the KISS principle, and the simpler the better. :D

On advantage on the D20 system is for your monsters to have character levels.

Once, your 10th level PCs run into a warparty of 7th to 10th chacter level kobolds they can believe that they were in a battle for their lives. Assuming that they survive.

You can do the same thing in Conan.

Just tailor your monsters for your PCs level.

Hey Sidney, I do this all the time. My players actually fear kobolds. Right now I suspect they think I only do this with humanoid creatures, but not so, wait till they wake up and smell the coffee!

What about calculating or estimating your own actual abilities and plating as if you were really up against that world? That would be frightening! :P

TimeLordsis the only game I've ever read that had objective measures for doing just that! You WERE your character and you were statted out by completting a questionaire that the rest of the players had to agree to.

The Strength section had thing like do as many pushups as you can. For every x pushups, get +1 to your Str score and things like that. My favorite one was: If you can juggle, add +3 to DEX.

Cool. 8)

I love lower-level games! The Good Old Fashioned Goblin's Are Attacking The Village plot is still my favorite! Once players get to high levels, they seem to think that they have become more powerful than the DM oftimes. Sometimes in the high level games, i have to give the bad guys ridiculous magical weapons and armor just to make the party feel that there is actually a fight going on. Then they get all the good equipment! I usually put an alignment curse on it for kicks. That way, they can sell it, but not use it. Also in high level games, the fighter's will save still sucks, Grerater Command him to fight the rest of the party.

....

We got robbed on that equipment....

and our fighter couldn't hit the save for the illusionary bear at level 14, let alone a heightened Greater Command.... we all would've died... wait... no, I had word of recall... you think I would stick around if the dwarf with the great axe came at me?

ok... back on topic...

I hate it when characters start at high levels. Sure, you've got all this fancy abilities and equipment, but when you start out at first level, you feel like you've acomplished something when you make it to the higher levels, and not just an interesting story. Take pride in the fact that you survived from 1st to 15th, when there are gamers out there who probably couldn't.

Especially in the world of KiltieMacBagpipes... that place can be scary.

Got a question for all the Conan players here. How do you guys feel about the B5 game Mongoose developed? People can get some pretty powerful characters going at higher levels, but at first level a PPG (the energy weapon they have there) can and usually does kill you in one shot. Very much a life and death feel there and even more so in a ship that's losing a fight. Very ugly there.

I don't follow the B5 universe, never really watched the shows and have no interest in the game atm. It's one of the reasons why I don't buy signs and portents, that mag seems more in tune with that game than Conan.

Doing a quick and dirty count going off the mongoose release page there have been more A2089 articles than B5 or Conan which was the same. Your question made me wonder on this. Some of them i didn't remember reading. :? so got to go back and read them again and index them in my notes. I follow Conan, B5 and A2089 as money permits buying the books :D my personel perception was more conan articles than any others and i'm subscribed. i've been split between running conan or B5 at low levels( a friend is suppose to do A2089) (Lately everbody has been playing champions and deadlands every weekend.) YES it will be low level starting at level 1.

cheers

Garet

Thanks Garet.

I guess I lumped A2089 in with B5 out of ignorance. I'm fairly new to Mongoose products and didn't appreciate the difference. Still, it mostly seems there is only 1 article per issue for Conan...and that's just not enough to justify the purchase. (there is just sooo much more I can buy with those dollars)

I've never played the current incarnation of B5 RPG, but as a big fan of the series I can tell you I completely agree with this feel. I've yet to see a character of the show taking a PPG shot and not looking at least seriously hurt. Remember how Mr Garibaldi was downed with one shot at the end of season 1 ? Ok, that was a sneak attack, but still.
