What should be the scope of ships in the supplement?

It is true that the navies themselves were unbalanced, and therefore it is impossible to create balanced fleets that bear any resemblance to historical accuracy!

I have played a lot of points related games and IMHO I have never enjoyed them as much as a historical scenario those types of game in my experience are really boring and come down to who threw the best dice on the night. There are of course exceptions to this but again in my opinion not many and by far the most interesting and challenging scenarios are actually unbalanced scenarios with realistic objectives. For instance damaging Bismarck enough to force her to retreat without losing Hood

I am a little lost on this one. If you are playing the same game, with the same mechanics in place, what difference is there to playing a balanced vs an unbalanced game? If you have the same players, and the same rules then isn't the winner always going to be measured by who rolled the best dice? Granted in an unbalanced scenario and average dice the player with the larger force and equal skill level to his opponent should always win, but as with any game that uses random chance in it, the player with the best dice on the night wins, balanced or not.

Ok 2 grains of salt, from a begginer's point of view. (Just finished reading the rules yesterday, been playing ACTA for a few months now)

Historical scenarios are what i'm interested in, trying to rewrite history has a certain appeal.

But it can be just as fun just to bring a fleet and kick the crap out of eachother.

I only took a quick look to the Japanese and German fleets so far (the two i'm interested in) and I was wondering in such a battle why someone would take a Kongo over a Nagato, the ships are so similar with definite advantage for the Nagato imo.

I know the game aim for scenarios/historical type of games but I was wondering how most of you are playing and if the fleet lists are balanced for non historical battles.

There are a few quirks in the priority lists, the Nagato being one of them, and these are supposed to be remedied in the supplement.

As for how we play at my FLGS, we are running the campaign rules, so we play from the 6 campaign scenarios listed in the rule book (which makes for some seriously unbalanced games at times).

As for balance between fleets, there are issues, especially in higher priority games, where the lack of AP in the German fleet list puts it at a disadvantage against the America and Japanese Fleets (though German Radar helps versus the Japanese). You truly end up creating a different play style depending on the Nationality of the fleet you are facing.

In any case, even though the Bismarck will never be as good as the Iowa, it is a lot of fun trying to beat the American BB down.
