How important is the size of the stand or counter?

I was wondering about overlapping ships. In the rules it says that you can't, make sense. However, what about the card board counters edge, can they cross.

Next when you upgrade to miniatures do you have to mount them? I was planning on it, it would seem they would be easier to play with. Next if you do mount them does the size of the mounting matter more than just being able to fit the ship model.

What size bases should someone use? Same size as the counters?

For stacking purposes, the counter IS the ship, so I'd keep them as small as possible, whilst still allowing for some sea modelling and a name plate for identification.

GW regimental and cavalry bases might work.

Using 1/3000 ships, I'm using GW cavalry bases for subs, destroyers & the like small ships, Small Regimental bases for most cruisers, and Large Regimental bases for battleships & carriers. Whatever's the smallest base that it'll fit on, basically. There is an anomoly that the cavalry bases are the same width as the large regimental, which is wider than the small regimental, so the light cruisers get narrower bases than the destroyers, but maybe they're just leaving them more space to maneouvre...

Wow, I'm surprised Wulf. I'm using 1/2400 scale ships and my bases are smaller than yours. Especially for the subs. I only left about a 1/4" space from the ship model to the edge of the counter.

I'm too lazy to make my own.

So basically you should buy your ships then measure for how large the base should be. I think the bases are good because you could use it to attach them to a storge case with magnets.

Using 1/2400 GHQ and Panzerschiffe models I CA them to a styrene base cut about 1/4 to 3/8 inch around the bow, port and starboard sides with about 5/8 inch at the stern for the nameplate and ensign. Way way cheaper that GW bases. I've donated enough already to GW in this lifetime.
