How do you pronounce Belit?

I was just wondering how everyone else sounds out the name of Conan's best girl, Belit. I've always said it like, 'bay-LEE', but I'm curious to find out how others perhaps more knowledgeable in language and grammar interpret the pronunciation. Thanks for any input!

Being that Belit is a Shemitish name, and therefore somewhat based on ancient Assyrian and/or Hebrew, it's probably pronounced something like 'bay-LEET'.

Ah, Conan's one and only love...save for fighting, wenching, drinking, caruousing, occasionally toppling kingdoms, and his later queen, of course. ;-)

I remember this debate. It a neat little name (it sounds slightly french, but its not).

Nice one, Malcadon!
I guess I've been partially right all these years, just keeping the 't' silent at the end. I like the way 'bay-LEET' sounds anyway: it's tough, yet also feminine, like the tigress she was!
Thanks all, and keep the input coming! It's been interesting so far!

BAY-leet.

Or it could sound like belly, as in belly-dancer!

I think Bêlit was based on a real belly-dancer from that time. After the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, belly-dancing became vary popular long after the fair ended. They were seen in lots of moving pictures, and you just know REH was really into it (I myself, like fan dancing ;) ).
