How do Shields work in 2e?

I have been wanting to take a crack at fully revising the Star Trek mod I made for ACTA rules and I know that there is a shield mechanic or 2e ACTA and was wondering how it worked since that would probably be easier to use as a base than my previous method or something new entirely. So if anyone can share that info with me, I would greatly appreciate it. Post or pm, either work.

Thanks,

Chris

not sure they would say,
we did a 2nd ed style game using the S+P article, for shields, we just added a shield number so on a bimith, say 15, and had it recharge 5 a turn. This may well not be at all right, but it's a pretty simple mechanic. From my understanding crits do nothing against shields.
We also cut the interceptors to the abbai, as shields and interceptors probably made them a tad hard :-)

along the right lines, but the shield mechanic has been changed a few times. things change, and get tested and change again, all part of trying to make sure everything is balanced.

as long as it all works, should be a nice interesting addition to the game.
and just as we all have different ideas on cheese, we all have different ideas on "balance"

Well, I've been trying to convert Battlefleet Gothic ships to the ACTA ruleset (may post some of them when they have been reasonably balanced) and basically used shields a bit like GEG, only it stops X damage per turn, rather then per attack.

Nice idea - thought about it myself - aern't BFG ships so much larger - i think the Escorts are a mile + in length and the Battelships 12-20? (varies in the fluff)

still, Be cool to see your ideas

Cruisers were about 5km IIRC while BB's were about 8km if memory serves. But crazy sizes allright. The size of B5 :D

Not exactly sensible idea to make them scaled to BFG ships then :D Damage values would probably be circa same as B5 station with weaponry to reduce that amount relatively quickly...

Yeah, was more interested (at first at least) to make the BFG fleets balanced vs each other before I worried about making them balanced vs the B5 stuff. Was also gonna wait till after 2e comes out before I make a serious attempt at it, just started on some of the Chaos and Imperial Navy stuff atm.

Yes and no - the Largest BFG ships I have (Imperial/Chaos battleships, Necron Tombship and Space marine Battlebarge)are about the same size as the War level ACTA ships(or my Octurion) the new Armged ships seem to be much more excessive in size - Posiedon / Adira etc etc (well they are too large for me)

There is a cool shipviewer site tha compares all the ships sizes - but I forget the address .

i never played BFG but caught a glimpse of some models a while back at my schools wargamming club and the models looked like they were plastic. Were/are they or was it just bad light and i was standing too far away?

Roughly yes. Of course if you just look at the models then OK but if you look at the fluff they are HUGE compared to BFG ships. Their BB's would be size of B5 station and even cruiser only somewhat shorter. I'm not sure but aren't B5 ships less than 1km lenght? That would make even BFG escorts bigger...

BFG has somewhat ridiculous sizes :D Therefore trying to scale them in stats so that they would be truthfull to fluff with intention of fielding them against each other would be even trickier than making shadows and vorlons true to fluff :D

Some are - the base set gives you very nice plastic cruisers which can be made into a number of Varients - both Imperial and Chaos - most other ships are Metal with Resin ones from Forge World

Imperial and chaos cruisers were plastic, rest metal.

yeah i was just comparing the models as i never played BFG or read the fluff. i was just wondering if the BFG models would dwarf the ACTA models.

Naah. About same size.

Well getting exact sizes for B5 ships is difficult but the generally accepted length of the Omega is about a mile (i.e. 1.6km, or the same length as a Star Destroyer in SW...)

nice comparison site - you can even move the ships around!
http://www.merzo.net/

The smallest Imperial (Warp capable) Escort (Cobra Class destroyer) is about the same size as a Romulan Warbird (next gen) or a Sharlin. The guns on the Retribution Class Battleship are a bit smaller than a White star. the Battleship (by no means the largest ship in the Imperial fleet and dwarfed by some ships of Chaos, Orks Necrons etc) is about same leingth as b5 but much chunkier and prob half again its mass.

So no one really knows or those who know are unable to say how these things work? Bummer. Guess I will have to wait until 2e is released to adapt the rules. :(
