Hivers

Mongoose hasn't talked about doing a Hivers book yet for MgT2. They have talked about the K'kree, though.

And if there is no Mongoose Hivers book in any sort of pipeline that gives us all carte blanche to use the CT, TNE and GURPS material to do our own.

I've long fancied the idea of running a Hiver Embassy Ship crossing the Imperium with the fifteen-year mission to ensure that no Hiver however remote has to go without a handshake.

There'd be a fun-loving zen anarchist Ithklur security detail, Gurvin traders who look like panda bears but have the capitalist souls of Ferenghi, OCD Zatachk engineers, various federation and local humans and all under an inscrutable yet cowardly captain who may or may not be a Manipulator...

.

Since we're on the topic of Hivers, I started to create my own homegrown Hiver chargen tables last year. I haven't touched it since last summer but I'd like to finish it some time soon. I intended to convert all the CT careers to MgT2 and only got through the first three careers so far. Those Mishap/Event tables take some time to develop.

Here's a sneak peek:

Feedback is welcome.

The Hiver's and K'Kree are the only major races without books. I would just assume that Mongoose hire Dave Thomas who did the GT book to crank out a new Hiver book instead of waiting another 5 or 6 years till one comes out. Mongoose has had the Traveller license for a WHILE now...

The problem as I see it is that there is a desire to do fully developed 'splat' books for each of the major races. It's what has happened before, and these take time developing.

For most groups, however, all they really need is a decent write up for the race and then just use the normal character generation processes with an alien template (as they do with D&D Races really). This could all be done in just one Aliens of the Imperium book, which could also then serve as a monster manual of sorts too, if it's expanded out with lots of entrees.

Personally I'd rather see genuinely new material than material that largely cut and pastes old existing material - almost all of which is in some form still legitimately available - to fit a ruleset that is actually close enough to Classic and Megatraveller that anyone can knock out their own character generation tables.

So while a Hiver book would be nice it should have more focus on their indispensable subject races like the Ithklur and Gurvin as these were never detailed in CT and MT and the GURPS and TNE material for them can't be as easily adapted.

Or what about a Characters Companion book that adds in not a plethora of new careers and races but new assignments and expanded event tables for the corebook careers as well as short character generation-focused sections on each major race similar to what Pirates of Drinax has for the Aslan (i.e. a chapter rather than a book) as well as much shorter chargen info for minor races like the Virushi and Ithklur.

It could even be a largely fan project - Mongoose invites submissions on this forum using a standard template document and promises to publish the best in the book with full credit and some (minimal but real) form of payment?

Also a lot of past alien splatbooks are filler - do we really need different character generation tables for every career and lengthy write-ups about their homeworld that no player character will ever visit and weapon tables for what are basically variants on standard Traveller weapons and starship deck plans for ships your PCs will never set foot on and a whole subsector statted and described when players will be using travellermap.com anyway?

I love filler myself but would rather see one big Character Compendium that covers every interesting race in less but playable detail than wait 5 years for separate splatbooks to slowly dribble out.

The thing that matters most about Hivers is their motivations and manipulations. Those are detailed pretty well in the GURPS book. The character generation types of stuff from classic are compatible enough with Mongoose that they cover that. I think at the price of the Far Future CDs, there's not much to add that's urgent enough to put them high on the Mongoose publishing pipeline.

As for a compendium of races of the Imperium, that would be one really fat book, and adding the whole of Traveller charted space would be even bigger. I have four thick Far Future reprints of classic books, and I think about six GURPS books, and they're hardly comprehensive; I think there was an alien race article in just about every print JTAS too.

There are not that many races found through large spans of charted space. They're important enough to be worth their own books, or half-books as with existing materials. Regional races probably make the most publishing sense as sections of sector books.

You could just buy the Classic Traveller minimalist books on the alien races, if you don't want detailed books.
