High Guard. Whats the verdict chaps?

Looks good to me! Worth the money. Look forward to testing it out.

:D

So much better than that "other book" which has now been recycled into something more useful - bedding material for a rodent.

LOVE the book, will turn it back in for an Errata Corrected version.

The Career path makes sense (especially for those upper level NPCs) and the ship design rules seem nice and a good combination of TMB and the old HG.

The combat system seems workable and has many nice features that make sense on the surface, haven't play tested it though.

I will use this book a lot more than Mercenary (but that's just me).

I look forward to that golden day when I shall actually be able to purchase a copy for myself. Unformtunatley, given the chaos the economy has wrought on the FLGS, that will have to be ordered online...and that isn't possible right now for a variety of reasons.

But it WILL be mine.

A while ago I decided that I would not buy Mercenary and High Guard,
because I thought I would not need them for my kind of settings.

This is still true, and I will definitely not buy Mercenary. However, whe-
ther I need High Guard or not, after what I did read about its shipbuil-
ding chapter, I simply want it - the PDF at least ... 8)

I know the feeling, but it is because my FLGS doesn't have it in stock yet. It's suppose to arrive later this week.

other than the Typos it is a great book, adds substantively to the rules and character options as well as the "character" of the game

Very well-done, the shipbuilding is great for fighters and capital ships. The career path is detailed but really only useful for people who want to run veteran and high-ranking Naval characters.

Essentially, it's "Adventures in the Imperial Navy" and it does a great job of that.

Personally, it really adds nothing to the Free Trader Traveller campaign that I am interested in. The weapon systems are still bland, the technology of ships isn't updated or expanded. The capital ship rules are nice but only of interest in a Fleet campaign.

I'd say it's an excellent resource if you want to play in the Imperial Navy. Other than that, it's not of much substance. IMO, of course.

Likewise, though in the past Mongoose have often just sent out replacements without requiring originals to be returned. Depends on the number of requests they get I suppose.

Excellent book, even if I did have trouble understanding a certain table

I'm sorry, but the terrible editing and proofreading of the book, even beyond the obvious typos, really detracts from the good material it contains.

I'm in this boat, myself, though I am planning on getting Traders and Gunboats. Always good to have a source for ships, though I don't have the time to make my own these days.

I'm trying to rebuild a 50,000 ton Solomani cruiser that a friend of mine built back in TNE days and finding the process a bit addening because of having to flip back and forth between two sections and STILL not finding how much torpedoes actually cost. I'm assuming you do have to pay for your ammo after all...

I was going to write a review of this for Freelance Traveller..and I may have to mark it down a bit for confusing organization unless I somehow become convinced that its a brain issue on my part.

True...but the core book says how much missles cost (at least in groups of 12) but High Guard only says that torps are 2.5 times the size of missles. do they then cost 2.5 times as much? They say they are purchased two at a time in 5 ton groups but they don't say (that I have found) what that price is.

Oh well, the ship is out of space before any of the extras are in there anyway... might as well just start over.

I need a spreadsheet REALLY BADLY for this...

I have it and like it; however, if my reading of the Computer Core rules is right, no ship under 100,000 tons can go less than Jump-6...

Still waiting for mine. I'm pretty good at making spreadsheets so maybe, if I can squeeze it in, I'll put one together. When I get my book that is.

Torps are actually 30 times the size of missiles (since one is sold by the dozen and the other as a singleton). Extrapolating the cost per missile to * 30 would be pretty close to fair. Even though the damage is only 3 times as much, the threat to other ships is much greater because of how much armor it can penetrate.

Interesting...the book seems to indicate that torps are 2.5 tons each. I'll have to check on that.

I just picked mine up at a local store; the miss-print copy of course (will Mongoose swap me for a new one or do I have to go to the store?). I haven't had a hugely in-depth look but my initial thoughts are positive. I like the new capital ship construction rules, the way it deals with bigger weapons and so forth.

My only gripe is one I commonly have with RPGs; they thing bigger == more and had to add barrage rules. The battleship having several hundreds of laser turrets is just not the way I like to apply my settings and sadly it means I need to deal with it using special construction rules for players. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
