[High Guard] Small Craft Cabin Space

Golan2072

Cosmic Mongoose
High Guard p.61 lists cabin space as 1.5 tons per passenger (costing MCr0.05), which, considering 14m^3 per ton, would be 21m^3 space per passenger, probably including life support machinery.

However, CT's High Guard lists 0.5 tons (costing MCr0.025) per passenger including an acceleration couch and life support, which would be 7m^3 per passenger.

So I'm considering using the vanilla MGT-HG stats for comfortable (think first/business class) and/or long-duration passenger accommodations, and the CT tonnage/cost for shorter-duration (up to 12 hours? up to 24 hours?) simpler accommodations (think military dropship).

Does it sound reasonable?

I encountered this problem just yesterday, when I designed some small
craft for my setting.

The 1.5 dton per passenger seat of Mongoose Traveller High Guard see-
med a bit too much for me, so I turned to my "alternative technology sy-
stem" (GURPS Vehicles) to see what it would produce.
There a "roomy" passenger seat requires 40 cubic feet, and the life sup-
port system requires another 10 cubic feet per passenger. Add all the
other features, and this does not yet add up to 1 dton per passenger.
GURPS Traveller Starships has passenger couch modules with 10 seats
per 500 cubic feet / 1 dton.

Looking at this, I decided that 1.0 dton per passenger seat would make
the small craft I designed quite comfortable, even luxurious.

That looks reasonable to me. 1.5 dTons per person for journeys of up to a few days, or 0.5 dtons for acceleration couches good for journeys of less than 24 hours.

Starships have a minimum journey time of 1 week so this gives a reaasonable 'sliding scale'.

In general I am going with the half ton acceleration couch as the standard, adding small cabins for long term as per earlier editions.

Hey all,

Shouldn't passengers at least get an acceleration couch at .5 dt.
Then, as the thread points out, Small craft cabin space is an additional
1.5 dt.

IMTU: Small craft staterooms gets a wommping 2 dt. w/ double occupancy.

Thats 1 dt per person, ofcourse bunkbeds are the norm.

Interesting discussion, it seems to come up every once in a while.

For space (volume) issues or Ergonomics take a look at how AMTRACK puts passengers in their cars

http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/am2Copy/Title_Image_Copy_Page&c=am2Copy&cid=1080080554190&ssid=142

That might help with some of the visualization of space use.
