[High Guard] Preview/Date?

Kilgs

Mongoose
I believe there were rumors of a preview for HG this week. Is that still forthcoming or did it get delayed?

Also, any idea on actual date of Mongoose release of HG?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been waiting patiently for this baby to make the MGT something special!

What ever did happen to the preview? It was supposed to be out last week if I recall correctly.

And October is TOMORROW ... and, theoretically, High Guard is an OCTOBER release :shock:

Maybe (yeah, right, pull the other one, it plays "Jingle Bells" :wink: ) they've foregone the preview because HG will be out TOMORROW?

:mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

(If you're interested, I got these shares in the Harbour Bridge, AAA+ rated by Moody's 8) )

Hi guys,

High Guard will be appearing at the end of the month, and I should be getting previews through for it any day now!

Great news. Better to let the book slip a little - or even a lot - and do it right.

So hopefully it will have:
* Enhanced Navy character generation.
* A new ship design system taking the best of what has gone before.
* Enhamced starship combat.

And hopefully

a) Ensure the writer doesn't misuse and mangle military terminology :lol:

and

b) Actually includes a selection of technologies (both OTU and non OTU) that everyone can agree are both believable and real high tech. :D

And and hopefully it will be 100% compatible with the TMB ship building system! :wink:

To some extent this might be harder for High Guard than it was for Mercenary as naval terms have changed a lot even in the lost century or so. The meanings of cruiser, destroyer and frigate have changed as technology and rolls evolve. The frigate in particular is worth following from the cruiser role in the age of sail to the powerful early ironclad and then a relatively small escort in WW II and the modern ASW ship.

I am relatively familiar with this sort of thing so when someone says ‘destroyer’ I expect to see something smaller than a cruiser, fast and well armed for its size (basically the classic WW II interpretation). I do not want to see the mistakes [1] made in Star Wars and Babylon 5 repeated where a destroyer is a capital ship because it sounds scary.

From what has gone before it seems that Traveller follows the WW II model fairly closely though carriers and the fighters they carry are not the superships they are in some other settings [2]. In fact fighters seem a bit marginal in a serious fight.

Notes
1. This is of course a very arguable point of view and should not be interoperated as a criticism of two SF series I dearly love – well, most of them.
2. Which I think is a great thing but that might just be me.

Hail to that....and if I see TL 16 Particle guns doing a "show-stopping +1" dmg or something silly there is going to be ranting! :p

Looking forward to the preview Mongoose.

Well I have seen many things over the years and if they screw up the names, I can always correct the names in my own printed copies of the book.

My bet is early November. It was a July release until August when it became an August release until mid-August when it went to September... and then in late August became October.

So November at the earliest.....if not after Christmas.

Seeing as it is already at print, I will take that bet! What would you say, three Bob and a pickled egg? I'll give odds on those :)

Bob: i) Short, vernacular form of the male name Robert; ii) Old (pre-decimalisation) British term for a shilling (12 old pence); iii) Name of the female character who dressed as a male whilst in the employ of Edmund Blackadder. Usually pronounced in a slightly explosive manner, as in:

"Good thinking, Bob."

Make it half-a-crown, a pint of Double Diamond and a pickled gherkin and I'm in :shock: :D :wink:

I'll go everyone one better :)

So long as there is no massive disaster (!), we'll have copies here at our B5 Open Day!
