Afternoon PDT all,

I have no idea on how the HG 1e Capital Ship Design Example Step 8 Screen Protection tonnages and costs are being calculated using the Capital Ship Design rules or the Spacecraft Options.

The Capital Ship Design Example Step 8 Screen protection has a TL-15 Level 6 nuclear damper is 144 tons costing MCr600 and a TL-15 meson screen comes in at 252 tons wit a cost of Mcr1,080.

Using HG 1e Capital Ship Design Screens rules p. 65 at TL-15 hulls >=3,000 tons can have a maximum of 6 nuclear dampers and 6 meson screens installed. On a 75,000 ton hull code of CP a single nuclear damper is 4o tons at cost of MCr50 and a single meson screen is 70 tons with a cost of MCr90. Using the HG 1e Spacecraft Options rules Armaments & Screens my numbers come out to be a TL-15 Nuclear Damper is (40 x 0.6) = 24 tons at a cost of (50 x 2) MCr100 and a TL-15 Meson Scree being (70 x 0.6) 42 tons with a cost of (90 x 2) = MCr180. I have no match for tonnage or cost on either the nuclear damper or the meson screen.

Moving back to CRB 1e p. 112, applying Traveller HG 1e Errata a Nuclear Dampers take up 20 tons of space at a cost of MCr30 a Meson Screen also takes up 20 tons of space, and HG 1e PDF Spacecraft Options Armament & Screens Table p. 53 my calculations are:

TL-12 Nuclear Damper updated to TL-15
Tonnage: 20 x 0.6 = 12 tons
Cost: 30 x 2 = MCr60

TL-12 Meson Screen updated to TL-15
Tonnage: 20 x 0.6 = 12 tons
Cost: 60 x 2 = MCr120

I have another failure to match the results shown in the HG 1e Capital Ship Design Example.

Is anyone out there who can please take the time to straighten me out (1) where Level 6 came from, (2) how the tonnage and cost got calculate, and (3) does the level play into the calculation?

I am really hoping that HG 2e is better and easier to use than HG 1e.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Screens for capital ships are defined on p62.

The example is 75000 dT, size CP.

A nuclear damper for size CP is 40 dT.
6 Dampers are 240 dT.
TL15 is 60% so 240 * 60% = 144 dT.

On HG 1e p. 62 the only reference to screens is in the Capital Ship Design Sequence, however on p. 65 has a section tagged Screens which shows in one table the maximum number of screens that may be installed/combined together by tech level. In a second table is the tons and cost of the screens available by hull code

The example is 75000 dT, size CP.

A nuclear damper for size CP is 40 dT.
6 Dampers are 240 dT.
TL15 is 60% so 240 * 60% = 144 dT.

I appear to have gotten the base tonnage and cost correctly and then went off the tracks because I did not know that Level 6 met that Julia opted to install the maximum number of nuclear dampers and meson screens based on tech level.

Thank you for straightening me out on how the Capital Ship Design rules handles screens, which leads to a question concerning rules on p. 50 of HG 1e.

On HG 1e Spacecraft Options p. 50 Screens my understanding is that the maximum number that can be operating is PP Rating 6 / 2 = 3. Julia's 75,000 ton hull can operate 3 or the 6 nuclear dampers and 3 out of the 6 meson screens at the same time.

Have I got a handle on the Screen to Power Plant rule from HG 1e p. 50?

Well, partly.

Page 50 is for non-capital ships. Capital ships use the procedure on p65.

Okay, the part I am on track with is that a ship, not a capital ship, with a power plant rating of six can operate a maximum of three nuclear dampers, meson screens, and at TL 15 three black globes at one time.

Does that mean that a capital ship can operate all six nuclear dampers and all six meson screens at the same time?
