Have points costs for ships.

Am I the only one that thinks the PL system is anything but simple when you get into high-level games and start getting half a dozen ships per point?

No you are not alone.

The first fight in our current campaign was 6 or 7 War Space Superiority scenario. Drakh against Narn ... that were alot of ship.

The Armageddon PL split process is ... interesting at high levels.

Other traits have values such as Fleet Carrier adding x4/3 to the value of the fighters onboard (after their Final Value is calculated) and so on. Fighter payloads are worth full value if they start on the board, x5/6 if they are launched turn 2 (with no special actions), x2/3 if launched on turn 3, x1/2 if launched on turn 4, etc.

Final Value

1) Multiply the ship's total firepower by its total toughness
2) Add/multiply for other factors such as Scout (generally x1.5), Command, Turns, Speed, etc.
3) Add the Dogfight value if appropriate
4) log[base3]([Running Total]/40)
5) 2^[Running Total]
6) Add Fighters if carried

The final score ought to be similar to the following:
Patrol PL: 100
Skirmish PL: 200
Raid PL: 400
Battle PL: 800
War PL: 1600
Armageddon PL: 3200

Very interesting...I trust you're putting this formula to good use not that you're an "official" playtester?

I've been interested in a lower fidelity ACTA model, designed mainly to understand things like the firepower and survivability of each ship - I have a rather simple model (excel based) that looks at mean hits vs different hulls with different defensive capabilities (adaptive armour, dodge, stealth, interceptors etc) but I'm not happy with it yet...

This is an a demo page of the type of thing I want to achieve...

Basically you would be able to compare one ship vs. everything else at its PL level and obtain a "mean" value for firepower and survivability. The basic methodology being that other traits and maneuverability would balance those values...still will probably never finish, just something I tinker with from time to time when I'm supposed to be either working or writing an update to my campaign website! (sort of like posting on the forum ;))

You do realise Triggy you've just listed a potentially viable system to convert all the PL's to points system already ;)

Looks very cool, I hope it's fun for you working on it as that seems the main reason to do it.

I am putting this to good use, and I am now an official playtester :P so it gives me a very good baseline to work from and form some instant opinions (which of course get modified later but not normally by much).

Are there any assumptions that you want explaining, hopefully most are fairly obvious (like Hull Factors) but others are a little more confusing (like GEG) and I'm happy to explain my assumptions and reasoning on any point :)

I can normally work out an entire fleet of about 20 ships in 30 minutes using this if I'm undisturbed!

Yep, and it only would take a day's work to do :)

I was invited after winning the latest Mongoose tourney and coming second in the one before. I also showed my opinions to Matt and a willingness to be a playtester. Basically I wanted the job and after watching everyone, Matt decided on a few to join the ranks.
