I found these, and may buy some to use in some of my games:

They are 1/2" in diameter/height.

I order from Shapeways fairly often as I'm also doing 1/4800 ships. Shipping is always the issue with them as the weight is nothing.

The models can be very good but since it is the product directly taken from a rapid prototyper, it consists of built up layers and and on broad areas, there is a pronounced 'layer/ridging' effect. The models also paint up best when stripped/washed first with something to dewax them as they tend to have a bit of a waxy coating.

What have you used to wash/dewax them?

I use dish soap and warm water but some Brits on the Yahoo Group for 1/4800 & 1/6000 swear by someting called (bentene)sp?

My understanding is they are molded with a fine silica sand or something and that the rough stuff. It comes off but has to be rubbed or scraped off if theres build up. So you might find a nice product underneath. Not always an issue but does happen sometimes. at least thats what they say when it used for casting ship models.
It also makes a big difference which material you choose for the casting.

I used warm soapy water and a nylon brush to clean them up, nothing seemed to come off.

I've emailed them with a picture and asked them if this is typical of their product? Lousy, IMHO.

Those are only about a half-inch across. At that size it's really pushing the resolution of the machine, but I think the level of roughness that you're seeing is definitely unusual for Detail material.

Still, you might also try ordering in Ultra-Detail, they are capable of higher-resolution. It just costs more.

I heard back from Shapeways, and here's what they said:

"I have received feedback from our Production Facility.
I am sorry to inform you that the we are unfortunately not able to re-print your products.
The rough surface is normal with these kind of detailed models in this material.

I would like to advice you to order the parts in a different material like "Frosted Ultra Detail" to get a less rough surface."

They at least offered me a credit of what I paid, so I could order a better material, which is more than what I expected.

I will re-order in Frosted Ultra material and post pics when they come in.
