Glorantha Preview

The GoG writeups were a travesty compared to CoP/CoT.

Yeah, but don't think GoG was ever intended to be the same sort of thing. I saw GoG as a quick-nuts-and-bolts run down of the various cults, and how they mechanically operated in the rules system; I never expected any of those writeups to all that detailed. For that, you had the CoP/CoT stuff, which went into FAR more detail on specific cults.

Well, exactly. Broad brush-strokes rather than specific meticulous detail. And in fairness to RQ3, that was the only real way that so many cults could have been realistically presented, and a lot of them did receive more extensive write-ups in later works. Which (to be fair, again) was probably a more useful way of doing stuff, as it allowed for a better level of detail for PC cults.

I understand that MRQ Cults of Glorantha is promising over 100 Cults in 160 pages.

Yeah. Sort form cult write ups have thier place, I suppose, but I'd have been happier with 16 cults over 100 pages. Something like a MRQ Cults of Prax or Storm Tribe.

Eh, that fits with me just fine, and I'd put that book into the same category as GoG -- designed not to give any sort of real substance, but just to provide a mechancial overview of the cults so that they can be used as a quick reference, stuff for GMs to build bad guys with, etc.

Now, I would be disappointed if we didn't later see the far more detailed writeups of specific cults as we have in the past, because the richness of the religions and how they related to the world and communities was one of the defining strengths of Glorantha, and such a thing can't be done in a one-page summary.

Me too. It is what put a lot of the flavor into playing RQ. Not to mention bragging rights. I used to love to show Cults of Prax to the D&D plkayers and let them compare it to Dieties & Demigods. Instead of noting what the gods and could do, and what it took to kill them, CoP noted what the gods could do for you, and to you!

As I noted in another thread, I am a former lurker that is interested in RQ even though I don't play RPG's at all. I don't know how big a market share there is in people just interested in the Glorantha material, but myself and a few members of my gaming group are all over this. We wont play, but will buy because of the source material. Stuff that is watered down and generic will be "skips," while stuff that is Glorantha-related will fall into the "must buy" category. Since im guessing that most of the people here are RPGers, I thought I would mention that your customer base includes non-RPG folks as well.

It looks very interesting so far, good luck with making the 2nd Age come alive !

hero wars had 38 cults in 40 pages and they were rich, rich rich. Having just read the 2nd preview of the Glorantha book thats just come online, if you check out the Aldryami section theres plenty of history and lore tying the cults to their cultures within this book - this is more than Hero Wars did!!!

Hero wars did brilliantly with the feats which gave a feel to the powers of their god and thus was enough, very much like GoG was an overwiew for gameplay - something you could quickly look at for mechanics rather than full cult write-ups, which I always thoguth would stem later...

Even in Hero wars we had storm tribe, trunder rebels to flesh'em - I still await with baited breath after 20 years for cult write-ups of the Lunars!

With luck this new cults book will complement the glorantha book as has been demonstrated that the magic of G has liased with it from the authors own comments. As a rq2-rq3-hw-hq'er, it'll be nice to see the first key books meshed like this - I mean, do any of us need to see a write-up of Kyger Litor done again????

Bring it on! 2nd age, here we come!

I mean, do any of us need to see a write-up of Kyger Litor done again?

Us long-time RQers? Probably not.

But such writeups haven't really been available easily for the vast majority of the RPing public for 10-15 years. There's a whole slew of new gamers out there that don't have the benefit of our experience, and it would be silly for Mongoose to ignore them. :)

There is someone who reviewed all the Gloranthan publications (Simon Phipps I think) and gives them minus points for including the cult of Kygor Litor!

Moon Designs has reprinted and omnibus cults book, and it's actually tempting to me, even though I have most of the source material.
