Gencon 2007 - Possible ACTA and VAS Games

Digger

Mongoose
Well, having looked at the Gencon website, it would seem that some people are trying to get a game of ACTA going.

Anyone who is interested in playing, append to this thread and if there is enough support, we'll see what we can organise.

We may also run a game of VAS for those who are interested as well.

Note: It is unlikely that Mongoose will be attending after last years fiasco and I don't blame them one bit, but it is at Reading Uni and at least this time it is slightly cheaper and we won't have to put up with the smell of stale vomit in the main hall - Ask Low-Roller! Ah, I remember it well!

What happened last year??

I was giving some thought to running VaS, but thought I might try it somewhere smaller first.

Last year it was at Butlins and it was a nightmare trying to organise it. In the end we had to run a knockout tourney, because Horseman Events wanted us to pay for each hour we had the tables (every slot was more cash).

So some people only got to play one game, that was the main reason we gave a free copy of SFOS to each entrant.

Hopefully this year, the tables are free and we are also looking at running a game of VAS as well. With regards to running a smaller game of VAS, then I am hoping to run a game at Conception, assuming that I get the books from Mongoose before the date of the 3rd February - I am not holding my breath though! :D

Reading is real close to us so I think it likely that Burger, Reaverman, Tank, the Adster and I will be in attendance...although I won't be spending the whole time playing ACTA!

I work on site for GenCon managing their events and game masters. There should be space for the games, but it would cost some ammount of money for each slot. If I recall correctly, the equation is $1.50 per 2 hours. Tournaments may offer a more relaxed pricing structure, but I'd have to double check.

I am always too busy at the con to do much fun, but I would love to at least stop by and watch you guys play for a bit. Let me know how things work out for you or if you need help.

I don't think I'll ever go to a GenCon...overseas or otherwise. Charging per game played is just wrong in so many ways...

It's fun to meet & play people from different parts of the country, outside your normal group.

GenCon Indy was lame due to the Cheese incident...and a tad long. So many other cool things to play/watch/buy.

Ahh, I should have remembered. Everything on this forum should be assumed to be from the UK. Oh well. I just got excited at the prospect of being able to watch a few games.

Ratty runs GenCon UK, he's good folk, but I do not know much about how events are run at that one. It's basically his show to run as he sees best.

Maybe I'll have things together enough by Indy to participate in a game or two.

And I quote "Ratty runs GenCon UK, he's good folk"

You are kidding right!

The guy couldn't find his arse with both hands; he has all the charm of a burning orphanage with the doors locked!

I wouldn't trust him to run a whelk store - It must be a different guy.

It was because of him it all went pear-shaped at Butlins, just ask any of the guys who were there.

Guys could you help me out here,

I think I have heard of Gencon in the US but don't really know what it is? It does not seem to be the same as Warfare or Colours etc? It seems to go on for several days and cost a lot of money??

The good news is that Reading university is approx 1 mile from my house so I am deffinitely tempted to go, I just don't know what it is?? I looked at the gencon UK 2007 website which said it was at the end of august and that was about it, didn't actually tell me what happened there?

Of course I am fooling myself, I will pay and someone will lose my ticket, but iat least it isn't far to go home

It's a gaming convention. Much like a comic convention. Except for game companies. They run tournaments and demos and you can buy stuff.

I'm tempted to organise a tournament at Gencon 2007 - is this Ratty person the guy to talk to about that?

Does anyone have a contact or even a real name (am assuming Ratty is a nickname but I may be wrong!) that I can contact about that?

You know, if there were a tourney rather than a few one off games, I'd be there in a second :)

I'm serious on that too so if you can organise a tourney (even a small one) guaranteeing at least three games, I will be there if my circumstances don't change.

I am still very tempted to go, possibly for more than one day even. fancy trying soe new games, but very happy to have some goes at VAS and ACTA as well.

@ Hash

Yeah, he insists on being called Ratty, even when I ran the last tourney and tried to get his real name! I think he even gets cheques made out to him.

You can contact him on ratty@consupport.com though he doesn't always repsond. The Gencon webpage has a forums section and he responds to that. If you organise a tourney, make it the Saturday and not too late as they normally have Rocky Horror in the evening - Lets hope the bar prices are still student prices.

Gencon is as mentioned a gaming convention but it should not be confused with some other gaming conventions like Conception etc.

GenCon is usually a much more comercial affair really run for games companies to show off their new stuff and try to sell it. (If I was the cynical sort I might say that it seems to be MAINLY run for the benefit of a company of wizards. Who live near the coast....). GenCon is in my experience about 40% gaming convention and about 60% industry trade show. It is usually fairly expensiv, though if Im honest with myself its usually only really expensive cos I buy lots of random stuff I dont really need :P

Again all that said, I have enjoyed it every time I've gone. (Though tbh its just nice to get away for a few days and have a laugh with some friends and doesnt REALLY speak for the convention itself). I'd still recommend every gamer go at least once though :)
