Thats probably next weeks post and I can do a guide for this as well if people are interested.

Please do! Your painting skills are phenomenal compared to me!

Your far too kind Ubersnug

If there is a difference then I am certain the only thing that would make that difference, is practice & time & to prove that I will include a pic of my first Dargan, painted about 5-6 years ago, along with the guide.

I just remembered, I never did send those Shadow Scouts to you. that offer still open?

And on the same subject I am painting my first true Dilgar ship at the moment and finally managed to tie down the mottling effect as shown in the Mongoose fleet pics. When it finally sunk in, was a really obvious technique and easy to do as well - doh. Thats probably next weeks post and I can do a guide for this as well if people are interested.

Do it! :)

My Dilgar are as-yet unpainted. This is in no small part because I'm afraid I won't get the paint job right.

Look forward to it.

And thanks for the encouragement!

Awesome stuff!!!

How did you paint the Battlestar? It's seriously the best painted one I've ever seen.

Thanks for the comment.

As mini paint jobs go this one this was pretty easy if a bit tedious. The mini itself is a great sculpt and a very good cast which made the paint job a lot easier and helps a lot to make it look better as well.

First of all I undercoated black then drybrushed all of the ribs in GW dark grey, then painted all of the panels in GW light grey. (Fortress & Codex grey). Left the engines black.

Mixed up the GW light grey 50: 50 with white and edge highlighted all the panels. (kinda boring but broke it down by painting several other minis as boredom breaks). I always have about 4 or 5 minis as wip as I bored with painting pretty easily.

Make sure you thin this highlight mix down a little with water since it makes painting straight lines much much easier.

Used a darker red and light red for the detailing, (GW Red Gore and Blood Red)

On the launch bay details, painted the floor of the bays white, ran a grey stripe down the centre. Painted over this with yellow ink and when dry ran orange ink into the edges and back wall.

Still deciding whther to paint on an emblem, in 2 minds as I want to use the ship in BSG as well as for another B5 race fleet.

Finally dry brushed the engines with black with a very small amount of added white to make a just off black highlight. You don't see it in the photo but I painted the "exhaust" of the engines with wihite then ran blue ink around the edge/rim to simualte a bluish white exhaust.

All in about 4 hours, with a servicible gaming ship after only hour, hour & a half.

Have a Triton to paint and I think I might paint this differently trying out the style which I found worked for the Dilgar Omelos.

Seems like I will be writing an Omelos / Dilgar paint guide. But before I do that thought it better to put up a photo of whats in store.

ie. there is still time to cancel;

And to strengthen my point on "time & practice" to Ubersnug couple of days ago decided to dig out my first painted Dargan, as well a useful reality check for me,

The red one was painted probably around 3 - 4 years ago and maybe about 50 to 60 painted ship minis down line from the purple one painted last week.

The red one was the best I could do at the time, the purple, the third best ship I painted last week.

(BTW For what I think are the better 2, you will need to wait and see Da Boss' up an coming "Dilgar War", & assuming that he thinks they are good enough to get in).

Only difference time and practice.

Now lets face it, every one of you can paint a better ship than my red Dargan so lets see them on this thread.

Just fantastic! Did you crush your brushes bristles into the model to get that effect?

Amazing! The difference is just night and day there.

I've been painting a good few years myself, however I did have a 7 year hiatus from tabletop gaming, which meant my painting fell away as well.

My problem is that after I learned how to effectively use dry brushing, I can't get away from it or try anything else which may look better. I base coat, add base colours, wash with ink, dry brush then very mild highlight dry brushing.

They way you highlight all the individual areas on the Dargans and the battlestar is a technique I would love to master but I just can't seem to 'Get it'. Dry brushing gives you a dirtier version of your approach and I've just stuck to it. But, I would love to be able to paint with such a clean result.

What Ill do is ill grab some pics of the ships I've managed to paint so far (so far its ships from my EA 3rd Age fleet) and Ill post them up for you to see and you will get what I mean.

Also, anyone got close up pictures of their fighters? I would love to see how people paint and base theirs. I actually went out and bought the fighters bases from Brigade models, as suggest by basint:

SFS-7001.JPG

So far I've used it to split my 4 bases of Firebolts into 8 bases and they work brilliantly. They aren't painted yet but I have a couple of pics on my iphone. Ill see if I can get them hosted somewhere.

Sounds like you are right on the money, I think its called "stippling", using a flat, stiff brush, & for once the cheaper the better, (like £2 in Tesco's for a pack of a dozen different brushes some of which were flat stiiff bristled brushes) then a bit like drybrushing ie scrape of the excess paint on the brush, not quite as dry as drybrushing then "poke" the flat of the brush down on the mini".

Amazing! The difference is just night and day there.

I too used to drybrush everything, mostly figures in those days. Was going through too many brushes so decided one day to just stop, probably around the time of the red Dargan.

Funnily enough the BSG Orion is the first time I have drybrushed since then, and I used the same cheap stiff bristled brush.

For me a lot of the improvement was finally listening and actually practicing what I have read many times over from expert painters, including those on this forum, over the years and ignored - Doh !!!!

I will cover that in the Dargan paint guide as well. Probably take a couple of weeks to write up and photograph both. The Dilgar approach is also very fast, probably spent 20% of the time on the Omelos as I did on the Dargan.

What Ill do is ill grab some pics of the ships I've managed to paint so far (so far its ships from my EA 3rd Age fleet) and Ill post them up for you to see and you will get what I mean.

Great. Love to see them.

Right, apologies for the crappy iphone pics.

First off here is 8 newly built Firebolt squadrons. They haven't been painted, only a crappy black coat on them just now. But I just wanted to see how they would look on the flight bases from brigade models and I think they do well in their job (not only that but they effectively double my fighter compliment).

And here they are again against an unpainted Corumai purely for scale:

Finally, here is a quick (but very old) crappy pic of what EA 3rd Age ships I had built/based at the time. Again, crappy Iphone pic but Ill get more detailed pictures tonight when I get in (My EA fleet has expanded to about twice the size since this pictures).

Nice looking crusade fleet Ubersnug & impressive number of ships,

Never thought that anyone would have more Chronus' than me but you pip me by one, (although I now have two additional Eclipse's   )

[Guess you will beat me hands down if your fleet has since doubled in size   ]

You even managed to tie with me on Marathons probably my favorite EA mini.

Very nice detail on your painted ships and your flleet will look great on the table when completed.

Would be good to some close ups of the ships

Been a while since I painted a straightforward EA ship but I am about to paint of a "Lady Nemisis" from LC's novel and although I probably should go for dry brushing I am going to see what I can come up with without drybrushing.

Well, that is only about half the EA ships that I have. But loads of them are still in their packaging. In total, I think, I have:

2 Victory class Advanced Destroyers
2 Warlock class Advanced destroyers
1 Command Omega destroyer
1 Poseidon class Super Carrier
4 Marathon Class Advanced Cruisers
4 Omega class Destroyers
4 Apollo class Bombardment Cruiser
2 Orestes class Battleships
8 Hyperion class cruisers
4 Nova class Dreadnoughts
2 Delphi class advanced scout
8 Chronos class Attack Frigates (I actually had 11 but I sold 3 to a friend)
1 Explorer Class Survey Ship
2 Avenger class Heavy Carriers
3 Artemis class Heavy Frigates
4 Sagittarius class Cruisers
4 Olympus class corvettes (currently en route to me)
1 Oracle Scout Cruiser
4 Myrmidon class LCVs
2 Hermes class transports
2 Tethys class cutters
oh, and 1 of the ships introduced in pnp. I forget it's name... the one with the Poseidon forward hull and the omega aft hull?

Like I said, when I get home tonight, ill take some close-up pictures of the ships I have painted and ill post them up for all to see. They aren't great (especially compared to your efforts) but they are table worthy at least, I think...

Speaking of Marathon's, is it just me or they really unlucky ships to use? Within our group of 4 players, every time the Marathon is used it gets blasted away in about the second or third turn without even making any real impact on the game. Omega's on the other hand seem to live up to their reputations....

Although I have had some memorable battles using Marathons, on balance would have to agree that when you want to win it is not a first choice ship. The Omega as well as being an iconic EA ship is a must.

Sometimes however I take along a ship to a game just because I like the mini.

That's the only reason I have stuck consistently with the G'Quan over the years.

great to see so many cool ships :)

I am honoured to have ships from Kickaha in my work - as you can see - lovely pieces of art. the two Dargans - both cool but the newer one is really great work! ! (I would seriously question if my Dargans come anywhere near you quality! )

a Dilgar painting guide would be wonderful to include in the Dligar War adaption -probably push it to 200+ pages :)

:D
