As an american, I'd like to point out that the latest round of French bashing was instituted due to their cowardly refusal to accept, condone or participate in the invasion of Iraq.....
Well, the debate in France, Germany and some other nations that op-
ted out of the war was not really one about weapons of mass destruc-
tion, it was far more one about the potential end results of the war.

The intelligence services told the governments that there was no proof
of any projects that would make a war necessary, and the political ex-
perts warned the governments that an unnecessary war would carry a
very high risk to spread and strengthen terrorism.

Of course I did, but I wanted to make that comment, and I was in a hurry
and did not see another suitable quote to attach it to, so ...

The sooner we Solomani collectyively get over this nation states crap and get on with conquering the galaxy the better :)

Seriously, what does this RW political crap have to do with Traveller? Why is this thread even here?!

Frog bashing, kraut bashing, mick bashing, dago bashing or any kind of bashing is both ignorant and just plain stupid. But to state that the French are stong allies of the US is also ignorant. There have been many instances in the past of the French actively working against the US. Heck in the 1790's we almost went to war with France and did have conflict between US Navy ships and French ships.

Any debt we owed the French from our War of Independence is long paid for. WWI and WWII for example. The USA does not owe the French anything.

And it's not ironic that the French and Germans have become closer allies. At this time in history the French and Germans have much more in commen than the they do with the US. It's actually a relief that Europe is moving closer. European history is rife with useless wars which did nothing but kill civilians and wipe out generations of people.

Basically war for the purpose of conquest has become outdated. No, I am not a pacifist but past wars have shown that either the world community will involve itself or at the least not recognize any territorial gains. Which give any insurgents hope. And unless you sterilize an area, you will never get rid of insurgents. It's much easier to just let people goven themselves.

Personally I love the Brits and Germans. :D

So, then, do you feel that that makes the French cowards ?

Nope.
I just wanted to point out that the 'flawed' intelligence on Sadam's goals may have been more 'overzealous' in its time table than wrong in its conclusions.

Overall, I believe that the citizens of a 'democracy' (Like the US, France, UK and Gremany - to name but a few) want peace in the suburbs from their governments. That goal unites the free world and means that I don't need to wonder if the Frenchman I meet at the airport is planning to fly a plane into my city. It also means that he (that same Frenchman) need not fear that I am planning on flying a plane into the Eiffel Tower.

Our differences are more like squabling siblings than warring ethnic tribes.

It has nothing to do with Traveller.
It is here to educate me (the first page), to entertain others (all the other pages) and to annoy you.

How is it logical for America to feel indebted to a France that doesn't even exist anymore, and hasn't existed for over two centuries? America's republic has continued unbroken since it's inception, but France was (at the time of the war) a monarchy. Today, it's what, up to it's fifth republic?
A fallacious argument that amounts to an attempt to argue that political changes mean France is not the same but changes of similar magnitude mean the USA is. No dice, mate. In fairness, you're probably just ignorant of the political system of both.
America's government has undergone massive changes, but it's not like their entire system has been rebooted a number of times due to a number of different events, which is what happened with France in the last couple of centuries (revolutions, foreign occupation, post-war reconstruction).

I never argued that the America of today is the same as its inception, only that its governmental system hasn't been overthrown or radically modified like you would get in the case of a revolution. The point I was making is that both countries are very different today than they were back then.

It isn't logical for modern day Americans to feel indebted or grateful to modern day France for something that happened two hundred years ago.
Nor indeed for us to be 'grateful' to people who fought and died in either "World War" actually, for the very same logic and I do agree. I said "As logical as hating France [for helping them]", if you recall. Once again nul points, mon ami!
So... you agree, then.

It would be logical to scorn them though. :)
Err, no. You might want to think this one through.
Oh jesus. That was a joke. Can't you see the smiley?

Make fun of =! bigotry. There is a lot that's admirable about the French, but one sign we're all friends is we can poke fun at each other.
