Forming a Play by Post Forum Game

Mongoose
Well I wanna organize a PbP game using the MGT rules. And I am wondering if anyone is interested in playing.

The game type I'm looking at is a Traveler/Trader game where the PCs may be involved in a wide variety of situations as they explore the universe.

Ideally I'd like the plot to be more a matter of consensus rather than a single GM pushing everything but I also know that games need a place to start from and a strong push to get going. So..

The group will start in the Antares 2421 A762ADA-D system. For map reference we will use http://www.travellermap.com/ with some flexibility to allow us to find the kind of systems that need to be found for plot purposes. I'm going for a rules-test game so I want to keep things more or less "Standards" based.

Characters are to be made using the standard rules. I have not figured out what to use for dice rolling, but as far as I'm concerned as long as the rolls are not too unreasonable, a little fudging isn't going to break the game. All dice rolls should be reported.

So anyone interested?

{Edit}
Note on Races
I am fairly open to any race as long as they would fit on a Traveler ship crew. Varger, Aslan, Kkree, and Hiver are all acceptable as is most any flavor of Humaniti.

I'd also accept Bwap, Virushi, and other races which have small enviromental requirements without much fuss, provided the player understands that it is up to them to rp these concerns and for their character to provide for themselves.

Fully aquatic races I'm a bit more shy about, and races like the Ahetowa and the Jdg Il Jadg are pretty much right out.

http://traveller.wikia.com/wiki/Antares_%28system%29

An interesting pick. Long insystem flight time with a 2g or 3g drive. Need to use extra space for more fuel, what does the system have worth the extra time? How did it become the capital of the sector?

I am willing to give it a try, free trader / detached duty scout games are the ones I like the best.

Race picks: Humaniti(Vilani?), Vargr, maybe Bawarp? Others??

Edit: I am hopeing the system has a large Farport, it should to save starships from haveing to waste time. Though starting at the planet and useing the long trip out to the fraport, could give time for refit and shake down of an older ship.

It is a high population world, and has Naval, Scout and Cooperate outposts.

I'm still looking up information on it.

As far as races are concerned anything in Classic or Gurps Traveler is Canon and fair game.

{{Edit: Oops I may have made a mistake and misread the population}}
Starport: A - Excellent quality services. Starship construction, starship overhaul and refined fuel.

Size: 11200km diameter

Hydrographic Percentage: 20%

Population: 10000000000 people

Government: Religious Dictatorship - government by a religious minority which has little regard for the needs of the citizenry

Law Level: Extreme - weapon possession prohibited

Tech Level: Average Stellar - Holographic Data Storage/Imperium Average

[[ Well as I want to run a play by forum game I need to show how I'd like things to be reported. Items in double brackets are ooc/meta comments and are not necessary for general use. First we roll up the 6 2d6 starting stats.]]
Starting Stat rolls: {6 x 2d: 9, 9, 10, 3, 10, 4}

[[Seems my dice are bi-polar tonight. I used cubes on desk to roll that. Only the final result of the roll needs to be reported though if there are a lot of modifiers it might be wise to make a comment on what is being rolled and what mods are being used.]]
Str: 3 (-1), Dex: 9 (+1), End: 4 (-1), Int: 9 (+1), Edu: 10 (+1), Soc: 10 (+1)

[[Now it's time to come up with a homeworld. Antares is the subsector capital and an ice-capped world, according to http://traveller.wikia.com/wiki/Antares_(An_2421)_(world) and for this game I'll have my character be a native from that world. According to the map the system is home to a scout and naval base as well as a corporate base.]]
Home World: Antares I (High Population, Ice-Capped)

[[Now I get 4 background skills. I have to take (by my reading of the rules, please correct me if I am wrong) streetwise 0, vacc suit 0. Leaving me with one skill I can choose from the education list. I'll take Art 0 and Computer. At this point my character is 18.]]

Survive: {2d +Int: 8} Yes
[[I live! Now it is time to see what Events befall me this term.]]
Events: {2d: 5} I inherit a gift from a rich relative, and get +1 DM to any one Benefit roll.
[[Thank you Uncle Lert! Now lets see if I manage to Advance in my Administration Career. I need to roll Edu 6+.]]

Training: Administrator: {1d: 3} Broker

[[I already have Advocate at 1 so the benefits for this new rank don't help me. I'm still doing well, and my character is now 30, might as well take another tour.]]

Administrator Tour 4
Training: Administrator: {1d: 5} Leader
Survive: {2d +Int: 7} Yes
Events: {2d: 3} I'm challenged to a duel! I'll accept and have to roll Melee (Blade) 8+ to succeed. [[I'll take Dex as the characteristic modifier, but I don't have either skill so I get a -3 for untrained skill, giving me -2 total.]]
Melee (Blade) 8+: {2d +Dex +Melee(Blade): 8} Safe! I manage to keep my honor and gain 1 Soc and Melee (Blade).
Advancement: {2d +Edu: 6} [[Barely again.]]
Training: Administrator: {1d: 6} Persuade
Rank: 4 – Chief
[[Well now I am 34 years old, and that means I have to start rolling for Aging after this term and at the end of every term after this. This roll uses the total number of terms I've taken so far as a negative modifier.]]

[[Well I served a long five term career as an administrator. This gives me 5 benefit rolls for the terms served, plus two more for rank, and I get 10,000 cr in retirement pension. Not bad. Also in my first tour I got +1 dm to any one Benefit roll, I'll use it on the first roll.]]

Roll 4: Other: {1d: 6} Yacht
Roll 5: Other: {1d: 3} Blade
Roll 6: Other: {1d: 5} TAS Membership
Roll 7: Other: {1d: 3} Blade

[[Now it is time to bring everything together and tally up my final character stats.

[[I still have a lot to do with this character in order to finalize things. I have to flesh out what happened, even fill in details like decide what gender he or she will be. Given the home world I will most likely be Villani.]]

[[Remember, other PCs don't need to take nearly as many tours, or may take more depending on what they want to do.]]

I would be interested in playing as long but my time is limited during the day. I will probably only be able to respond to the thread once per day usually after 7:00pm EDT.

Let me know if this will be a problem.

As a life long memeber of the Church of the Stellar Divinity and a Child of Mother Sanoet. David joined the IISS Survey service and left the watery womb of his birth world, to travel the stars and grow in spirit. After 20 years of outstanding service in the IISS, it was time for him to cast himself on the stellarwinds of fate and see where they take him now.

Blessed with many spacer phobias and superstions, on top of being a faithful Son of Mother Sanoet and a Lightbringer in the Church of the Stellar Divinity. David while not outstanding in one area, is competent Pilot, Astrogator, and Sensor operator. Haveing spent 20 years in the IISS he very streetwise and something of a Jack of all Trades. Being able to lend his 2 good hands and sharp mind to many tasks outside his areas of expertise. While he has a few usefull contacts and allies, he is not deeply involved with anyone at this time. But is still after many years, bothered by not remembering many of the events between his 31st and 32nd birthdays. He has some ideas, but knows better than to ask to many questions.........

The Rurian Rebeca Nova is a well known musician in the Antares Sector. She once worked as a Corproate level manager until her passion for the Sa Hyanx, or the Rurian Crystal Cloud, called her down another path. She has toured many of the Subsectors of Antares and the Entire Sector once, but most feels at home performing on the spot, when the moment "seems" right.

Her music and recordings are promoted as being music that anyone could listen too, and that is the main focus of Nova's compositions. To produce music as timeless and as universal as the Masters of old once did.

Description: Rebeca is very tall (2.1m) and thin, her ancestors having adapted long ago to Ru. She has a very kind look about her, and is quite striking, very attractive. She seems almost possessed when playing, with a great deal of passion and intensity that has won her many male admirers and several marriage proposals over her career.

Design Note: The Sa Hyanx, is an instrument that uses tiny simple robotics with particularly formed crystal bodies that produce tonal effects thru resonance when they interact, in addition to startling visual effects around the player produced by the "cloud" of bots and the many fields they use to operate. The instrument sounds like a mix between a Theremin and a Glass Harmonica, but also is keyed from the human voice.
It is very haunting in its sound, and the music is very transportive. The Cloud of the instrument is gesturally controlled by "conducting" the bots fields by using the body's bio electirc fields, so it can be a very difficult instrument to master.

I would be interested as well. I will try to post a character, if there is still an opening.

There is still an opening.

I figure I need about three good once daily posters to run a decent game and that I can handle up to eight at absolute max, but I also anticipate a high drop-out rate.

Right now I'm working out what is available in the shipyards for players to buy with their ship shares. I like used ships as they have more "character."

Just to add a note to those making up characters for this game.

The noble character that I posted here was meant as an example to show how I want things done. If you want to play a noble by all means roll one up. If needed I will make a character to fill out the crew.

Also remember I want all die rolls reported in a form consisting of at least what is being rolled (stat or skill or number of dice and any mods you are using) and the result separated by a colon ":". Ideally I'd like these rolls to be set off in curly braces{} just to keep everyone clear on things.

I will show all my dice rolls, but it is going to take time to type up to conform to the format presented above. I use a different method of abbreviated codes for skill origins, but i will do one we can understand.
I had to type up my character quick, so they would not see me while at work :D

As far as Nobility goes, my character is a Celebrity Noble. I do not think she has an actual title or holdings in an Imperial system. Is it possible to have a B soc and not have a title? I figured she would be like Sir Paul McCartney or something, and not a leading a squad of marines or owning a city type of noble.

Of course, most wise GM, if it means that my character must be given a large house, or ship, or vast riches, then she will have to shoulder the burden. It's all for the game!

Don't worry too much about that, just try to note things in the future. It is more a way to help see where all the numbers are coming from and to make sure no one's dice are too loaded.

I figure soc is more a reflection on how well your character works in society rather than an actual rank. Also, I'd probably require a term in a Noble career for an actual title starting off. That said I'd say a soc of 10+ would be the level where you start seeing minor titles given out.

For instance a life-long butler may have a very high soc score and know many nobles, even as good friends, but not actually be noble himself. It is a measure of how you are able to work and fit into society.

The first three options for players to choose from. I'll be doing more ships, but here are the first three used free traders for you crew to look over.

[[ As the capital of the sector, Antares has alot of power brokers on it. Could we get our contacts to help us get a sub-sector or 2 wide supsidised ship contract? [[ Ships seem interesting, but for their age somewhat overpriced. I don't see how any of them could make money without doing risky speculative tradeing? On the Bwap ship, is the passenger deck staterooms and liveing areas humaniti standard or has the whole ship been converted to Bwap specs?]]

[[ Are these TL 10-11 ships? How long will their hulls, fittings and drives last? Could you do a few 100 dTon scouts hulls, that have been refitted as mini-far traders? like in this pic...

thanks]]

Characters purchasing an old ship gain 1d6 of ship shares per 10 years of age. That's 1-6% of a discount per decade. I also applied this with the costs of the upgraded equipment on the ships. I'll go over my math again but these are the prices.

As far as how long the hulls will last, structure baring accidental or combat damage will last for centuries. With good maintenance drives and electronic systems can last upwards of a hundred years.

[[ A ok, that is a longer operation life than I was thinking. So the slow depreciation rate shows that used stareships maintain good value up to around the 100 year mark, when a refit/rebuild of the drives would be needed.....]]
