Forbidden Planets

How frequently would Traveller need to be updated and expanded? Monthly?

Who knows, eh? It certinaly would be ofassistance to by up to date with current scientific views. It would be grand as a regular PDF adding options for referees and players.

Anyway, it's not a post about an update to Traveller, it a post about the wonderful new views on the development of solarsystems and planets that are being theorised, not to metion additional material for refereess to add to their games if they wish.

Reading over the article, I realize the various Traveller world generators, especially MegaTraveller and T5 do follow the models mentioned with gas giants in the inner orbits and plenty of exoplanets. I have at times created systems that would preclude human colonization. It seems the reality we hear is showing our universe to be very human and maybe life unfriendly, that our solar system is actually an anomaly. Dull and boring for a game about exploring the stars.

The article is actually very helpful in setting up extended systems. One of the things I frequently do as a Traveller referee is create extended system profiles. Knowing where all the planets are in a system gives it more character and lends a greater level of reality for the players. When placing the gas giants, companion stars, planetoid belts, and planets, I typically refer to the Solar System as a guide, but as the article points out, there's a lot of variation in other stellar systems. The info in the article will help me convey that variety. Great stuff!

Should be interesting how the expanded world generator in the Great Reft kickstarter addresses system building. Will they follow something similar to T5 with bigworlds, mainworlds up to size 15 and a variety of gas giants including brown dwarves? Nebulas, proto-stars and black holes will change the face of a galaxy. I'm all for waiting. I love system building.

Brown dwarves, nebulas, protostars, black holes, super earths are all some of the possibilities. Along with systems with multiple stars.

Gas giants as well? I like the way gas giants are handled in T5 actually, though they don't get quite large enough. Also a discussion on what constitutes a hot Jupiter, a gas giant, and an ice giant would also be useful.

I find superpuffs fascinating :)

They don't get large enough? The largest on the table is brown dwarf. I think they in fact maxed out.

A superpuff would be a Bigworld with a high end atmosphere. Hot Jupiters are gas giants close to a star. It's all there.

System detail is nice but is getting super detailed all that necessary?

I was pointing out Traveller has had most of the stuff you say you wish they would include. That's an argument?
