Fleet size

Ok this one is for the play testers, with regard to fleet sizes. Currently I have the following ships;

3 Tribal Class
3 J Class
2 Leander Class
1 York Class
1 Hood
2 George Vth class
5 U class subs

How big a fleet is that?

Check out this page for fleet sizes in the Pacific. May be a little different for the Atlantic.

I just wrote the PLs after each entry...
3 Tribal Class - Patrol
3 J Class - Patrol
2 Leander Class - Skirmish
1 York Class - Skirmish
1 Hood - War
2 George Vth class - ???
5 U class subs - ???

From the preview we saw the Queen Elizabeth class battleships are battle level, so war is obviously reserved for really scary ships, Bismarck, Iowa, et al.

If we assume the bigger heavy cruisers are at raid, then your average 6" or 8" heavy cruiser does belong at skirmish, especially if it's not that heavily armoured.

Well, if the QEs are at battle, I guess that puts the Nelson class up at War, with the Iowa, Yamato etc.

Pretty much split out by weight of broadside :) Although the Bismarck was 10 000lb less than the Yamato... still, it's all relative.

Yes, very true - thickness and coverage of the armour belt is a big influence, as is speed.

'Speed is armour' afterall... *tries to dodge plunging fire*

Can you give us how many battleships, heavy and light cruisers, destroyers, subs and carriers would be needed for a ten point battle fleet? Or is that classified still?

That would depend on the 'battleships, heavy and light cruisers, destroyers, subs and carriers' - not all of them are the same PL!

Assuming an RN fleet, hoping to include one of each BB, BC, a single CV and fill the rest of the 10 points with supporting CAs, CLs and DDs.

If that makes any sense at all...

They're still not all the same PL, but if no-one else suggests a mix, I will later tonight (I'm at work right now, and my memory isn't THAT good!)

By the way, do you mean "One of every class of BB & BC available, plus..." or do you mean "One BB, one BC, one CV, plus..."?

Are you asking how many ships you will need for VaS? If so then from 1-50. I've got a number of other naval mini rules/games and scenarios in those range from just one ship on a side to dozens. Pacific battles were certainly larger than Atlantic battles. The good news is as you are growing your fleet you can play smaller scenarios and move up to the larger ones over time.

One of every BB and BC class available is what I meant, plus one CV rather than one of every CV class available.
OK, basically, if you want one of EVERY BB & BC, you can't get a decent mix - too many of them.

Best mix would be:

2x BB
2x BC
1x CV
2x CA
2x CL
4x DD, Sub &/or aircraft squadron

That's missing 1 BB (and a whole fleet worth of Cruisers).
