Fleet program

OK, the program rocks.. Makes life simple.. The increased points make putting together a fleet using a fleet box set. I give it 2 Thumbs up..

I helped test the early version, and while an increase to 3500 pts is nice, I'd rather see there be no limit. I've got a convention game being planned that has 3800+ pts on one side. But not everyone is going to go so big.

I so love a big game, I ran a Klingon fleet box vs Federation Fleet box (plus a CA) game at a convention last month. Ended up being 3635 per side.. It was glorious to see all those ships on the board at once. If I would have had access to your fleet maker back then it would have made life so much easier when printing and building the army.

Stumonster

I hope that someone from either Mongoose or ADB steps up here. There's plenty of interest on the part of us players, just not on the part of the makers of the game, it seems. Like everyone else i'd like to get my hands on it but it seems unfair that you not be rewarded for your time and initiative with this. Hope the situation changes and soon.

Thanks for all of the interest, and thanks to those who have helped with testing and have said kind things about the program. I appreciate the help and support.

Billclo: There was a reason for the limit before on the fleet size before the PDF version, but that has gone away and at this point, theoretically, the sky is the limit. It would just take a really long time to create and print a 1 million point fleet. ;) I will probably just move the limit up to 5000 and call it good.

I am still torn about what to do for the BPS special action. I kind of like a track of numbers; but then space wise, just a box to write in makes a lot of sense. Hmm. Any other suggestions out there??

I am not sure what to do about letting everyone try out the program. So far I have only sent copies to people I know have purchased the rules, so as to not disseminate the ship stats without permission. The feedback from all of those who have tried out the program has been very helpful in making it better. (Thanks again to those of you that sent suggestions!!) I am kind of in a tough place because I would love to let all of you try it out and give suggestions for improvement, but I do have to be careful not to step on any toes at ADB or Mongoose.

As far as the BPS special action goes, I would personally rather just see a box with space to write in the boosted amount rather than a track. That's just me. I just tend to write the new number down and work from there. I think adding another track to the sheet risks cluttering the design. No real big problem, but that's my thought.
As far as the Fleet program goes in general, why don't we set up a poll and let Mongoose know how we feel about this.

I propose three options; I will find Physical ship cards more useful and will buy those, I will find an online ship card generator (like Stumonster's) more useful and would rather buy that or what the heck, i'll buy both.

What do you think?

I prefer cards that are laminated allowing me to write on/wipe off. The biggest hassle with those are when updates are made and something significant changes.

Another thing is having the right number of cards for the fleet you're running. Virtually impossible for any publisher to make just the right combination of ships that will keep the majority happy.

This is why I like printing the ship roster out, each ship a 1/2 page (portrait) or maybe 1/3 (Landscape?) - especially if I can go to an army-builder like program and select what I want (no I don't like how complex their program is to do anything under the hood and their "licensing" model is a freaking rip off).

So having the ships at 1/2 page would be great. Print one ship, turn page around send it back through there is ship #2... cut and be happy.

Hi Again,

First, there are a couple of forum people who have be using the program pretty regularly and have given some good feedback. I added the ability to select the printer when printing the fleet roster thanks to a suggestion from Tim, and it seems to be working correctly so far. There has been some feedback that I wanted to run past the 'community' to see how people feel about them. The suggestions are regarding the control sheets. In general, I would prefer not to start from scratch on the control sheets, but I do have more flexibility in creating them using pdf rather than word format. That being said, suggestions have been:

1) Boost Power to Shields box or boxes

2) Move boxes to keep track of speed for the ship for any one turn

3) Line up the damage and shield boxes or group them in 5's to more clearly mark damage

4) Slightly larger critical boxes

5) Split the Orion weapons locations out for picking, rather than in combos on one line. (I will probably do this after more ships and rules come out for the Orions so I know what I am really dealing with in terms of numbers and types of systems and weapons that can be selected.)

So, If I just throw the suggestions on to my current format, the changes would look like the highlighted:

By the way . . the stats for this ship have been seen before so I am not revealing anything new here. Changes are in red boxes

So, I was wondering which feature you think should really be added. I like the move bar idea, and I kind of like having the shields count down rather than up.

What do you guys think? (Bear in mind personal preferences will always vary, but I am looking for a format most people can live with.)

EDIT: These are designed to go 3 to a page in Landscape format

I definitely like adding 5s to the shields and damage. Bigger crit boxes are good.

By the time I've done BPS a couple of times and taken a few hits, I'm usually just scribbling a number down and not using the track at all.

I don't feel the need for the movement box personally.

You've put a lot of work into this and it shows. My thoughts:

1) Maybe have the damage track under the shield for a more logical flow
2) Group the boarding parties somewhere nearer the rest of the traits
3) I'm ok with just a scratch box for BPtS and Speed

Latest version looks better I think, it would be nice to have this or something like it. But let's be honest here, Matt won't ok it if they are working on something similar, and SVC is just going to say no on principle. :(
