First 5 Point Raid with Shadows

I played my first game using Shadows yesterday, 5 Scouts against 5 Whitestars.

I was obliterated.

All I managed to destroy were some of the fighters...and that was when my own ships exploded.

Whitestars can turn exceptionally well so the SM of the Scouts did not really help.

Every time I hit, they dodged. Almost every time they tried to negate my Stealth, it worked. I did so little damage, it was a hideous nightmare...

oooops!

the shadow scout weapon has the anti-fighter traight thereby ignoring the dodge ability, that might have helped ;-p

scouts should do alright against whitestars if you can avoid the front weapon, antifighter negating their dodge, plus your stealth helping your ships, and IIRC shadow ships dont explode, they just die

Being very nimble, that was actually quite difficult! In fact it was not the front beam weapon that was doing all the damage.

But with careful positioning, his fighters were always, and I do mean always, out of my front fire arc...

He was lucky and I was unlucky with his dice rolls, especially as Whitestars were getting a +1 to the roll...

Better luck next time...

I think the Anti-fighter ability was mentioned as it ignores the White Star's dodge not just their fighters. Of course if the White Stars were also staying out of your fire arc...

I thought...and it would appear, so did my opponent, that Anti-Fighter only works against fighters, not "regular" ships.

No Anti-Fighter (despite its name) simply ignores the Dodge trait whether on ships or fighters.

Which is why the Liati has lots of Anti-fighter weapons, as its designed to fight White Stars.

Well, that would have made it a totally different game!

It would have definately changed the game - the dodge ability is the WS's greatest defence...a SAP, DD weapon with Anti fighter is probably the strongest weapon (barring the Liati and Drakh Cruiser beams) vs WS you can find.

In every game I've played or seen with White Stars vs Shadow Scouts, the Shadows have kicked ISA butts everytime (sometime quite easily!) (Plus its always nice to stop the ISA player picking up his dice to dodge pointint to the AF trait and saying I DON'T THINK SO! )

yep as everyone has said so far (so I may as well chip in :P) you must read the rules VERY carefuly where traits are concerned ;) Anti-fighter trait does exactly what it says in the rules: negates the dodge ability of anything hit by it. Including whitestars :D

Every game I've played with shadow scouts vs whitestars has resulted in dead whitestars ;).

Oh and if your facing a whitestar force like that personally Id stikc with the 5 scouts. Dropping down to take a hunter is just losing you antifighter goodness and if your using up to date shadow lists then the Hunter is war level so you can only get 1 scout with it.

If your having fighter trouble thouh try parking your scouts nose to nose or better yet in a sort of triangle or square formation where they cover each others rears :)

5 Scouts is a decent fleet, particularly against ships that can dodge (e.g. fighter heavy forces and ISA) but in general the Hunter is probably going to be a better bet for 5 point Raid. Of course, if you know your opponent in advance you can pick and choose :)
