Firefly returns? :)

In the beginning of the first episode Wash pays hommage to Traveller.

Just though inquiring minds might want to know...

.

Explain?

He said something like "hang on, travellers", and some of the traveller fanbase wet themselves and took it to mean that Joss Whedon played Traveller. Problem is, there is no evidence for that at all.

Any deliberate connection between Firefly and Traveller is entirely imagined and assumed by those elements of the Traveller fanbase. Yes, Firefly shares some conceptual elements with Traveller, but there is no evidence to suggest that this is anything other than a coincidence (there is a lot in Firefly that is completely different from Traveller too, after all).

The use of the word in the phrase is not surprising. The crew are travellers after all, they're travelling from A to B. If someone calls somebody a 'traveller', it does not necessarily imply any connection to the RPG.

That said, it would not be hard to create a Firefly setting for the Mongoose Traveller game, but it certainly would not resemble the OTU much in detail.

I suppose the fans will not be satisfied unless someone directly asks Joss Whedon if he was swayed by the Traveller RPG and gets a direct answer back. Meanwhile, the sensible thing is to assume (based on everything else that he has said) that there is no deliberate connection.

You're forgetting that Joss Whedon did credit (in the DVD interview?) the idea of Firefly to an unnamed RPG he played at college or some such. Of the possibles Traveller seemed the best fit to many. That is the bigger driving idea behind the wondering ("wet themselves", please  ) about the connection. The "Hang on travellers." line is not the biggest part of it, just a bit of support IF Joss Whedon actually remembers the name of the game he played (once iirc his statement) and his forgetfulness wasn't just to avoid issues with naming one product specifically.

I would need an exact cite for that. Track down the exact quote (and where it is from) and I may believe there is some validity to the claim.

As a bit of trivia, Joss Whedon used to play Traveller in a universe he
created that was the basis for Firefly.

I would be happy to but my memory isn't clear on the where exactly. My DVDs are out on loan or I'd check them. It might even have been a fan site Q&A session but the only one I dug up on a quick look is now 404 :( (It has been a few years...). Maybe someone else has the answer.

Joss Whedon has said he was a gamer (isn't there a Buffy episode where they are all playing D&D) and he said he played an SF one at college which in part inspired Firefly.
We would have heard by now if he had admitted it was CT so this is all supposition really.
You can also see the similarity in his work on Titan A.E. and Alien Resurrection to the typical CT adventure so there is a good chance it was.
Also the 'Hang on Travellers' quote always seemed shoehorned in too much to be other than a nod to his inspiration.

Yeah, well, there are always those that seem to think that the universe can't contain both their contempt for Traveller and their love for Firefly. It's a hotbutton issue, and there is pretty much no point in trying to discuss it with them; although I confess that I had hoped that with the permaban of the last antifanboy we had heard the last of this obsessive rancor. Alas.

Ah well.

I remember reading a quote ages ago where he said that Traveller was an inspiration for his treatment of Firefly. So Word of God is there, for what it's worth.

Of course, Traveller != Third Imperium, and there's any variety of homebrews and houseruled editions out there, so take of that what you will. Just because D&D is an inspiration doesn't mean that the author is writing Forgotten Realms.

Can't remember the freeview number, but it comes up on my freeview index as the Horror Channel.

Firefly is on UK Freeview Channel 319 on Monday and for a few more days after that but I think there are only a few episodes left. But they will re-run it in a few weeks.

There is no Freeview UK channel 319, which channel do you mean?

I don;t think it's on Freeview, it must be a satellite or cable channel.
