Finally saw the figs

Well, I perfer these over those Starwars miniatures... mostly because I don't have to buy tones of boxes (which, as a game store owner, you'd perfer) to get what I want....

I actually just want the gamers to get product they are happy with. If its star wars minis randomized, or starship troopers not random, I really dont care, what ever makes them happy. All truth be told, I think most gamers spend what they have/can on games. If they have 100 extra dollars for games, even if something is cheaper, they will spend the leftover on a different game.

The thing that worries me is that they wont want to buy these at all. I was in the store for a short time today when we got these in, and so far the feedback from gamers was about what mine was, no one is even slighty impressed or ready to buy ANY of this product. Our big game night of the week is tommorow, that will be the true test of the local market.

I am hoping for everyones sake we just got a poor batch......Im sorry but gamers deserve better for the money

Saw these today in my local Travelling Man and I would have to say all in all I was impressed.

They had some Marines and MEA out of the box so was able to pick them up and have a good close look at them. They are tiny, but then I am used to those burger stuffed GW figs so.... some of them had the most freaky eyes, but nothing that 15seconds with a paint brush won't sort out. I was left feeling the tanks where to small in comparison to the men, but they looked ok, nothing that a quick touch up won't improve.

My only grumble is over the price, but then I am skint so unless they where giving the stuff away I wouldn't be happy...... Well to be honest I would prefer if they would pay me to take the stuff away

As a store owner I think the models are pretty nice. The local hardcore painters seem to be OK with them.

The price is a little high. Other gamers are going to be hard to convert with them being twice as much as the WotC stuff. I think that will be the biggest stumble in sales.

Remember that as FLGS staff your evident opinion is what sells. If you are 'eh' on them try to return them to distribution and get them to folks that do want them because your customers will feel your 'eh'. {Sorry, you probably already know that, it's just habit because I talk to so many owners/staff that are in it for their fun not business} :)

see i think there quite cheap compared to other prepaint minis out there.

fir example i saw a pack of like 6 super heroes on click bases in a se through box rather than the normal random, and it cost £24.99 - £29.99 while the bf-evo stuff in uk is £20 and i think bf evo is nicer painted than the heroclik stuff.

i realy whanted to do the starwars stuff but at £17 a box with x amount of random bits in it, didnt sem like good value to me as i could just buy a box of rubish !!!! i bough a job lot of waterdamaged mechwarrior stuff at £1 a box out of the 30 boxes i found 4 bits i liked and 3 copters one with its blades missing :( i feel sorry for those that payed full price.

In the US the WotC stuff sells for $15-$22 a box depending on the release and most retail is about $2 to a pound sterling. I could easily see why you wouldn't want them at your prices.

On a side note I have spent as much as $45 US for an individual fig out of the Star Wars collection because of the *&^%$#@ 'collecible' thing. I wish everyone would do units or close (like good old micro armor).

Any feedback from Mongoose on how well they seem to be doing with it yet?

I got a chance to see them tonight and at first I was underwhelmed. I thought about the difference in the pictures we've seen of the individual models on the MGP site and the pictures people like Mr Evil have been putting up of whole armies. The general consensus appears to be that they look good on the table so I thought I'd give them a try and purchased a squad and a tank.

Another person had bought a squad so we had a little training exercise to try it out. The models look great on the tabletop, two people watching agreed that while they're not spectacular they're better than Clix and they're a good 2' models. (the distance where they look good). Incidentally one of the people watching went up to the counter and bought a squad and a tank.

A couple of the general complaints I heard tonight were: they're tiny, they're made out of the clix bendy-plastic, the models have bugged out eyes. To answer them, the models are tiny compared to the heroic scale models that most people play with, it's just different, not better or worse. The models are not made out of the bendy plastic, but the odd bent barrel on a few troopers do nothing to alleviate that concern (Think of the hard plastic models that have a few antennae in them and that's about the size and strength of the rifle barrels. They're not as fragile because they're much shorter but yes, they do wiggle a little). Lastly, well yes, some of the models do look like they've seen a ghost. Hopefully mongoose will remove the eyes from future releases.

All in all:
Models: B
Price: C
(about what I'd expect to pay for what I get)
Rules: A

I'm excited and I want some more.

Hi There, I am new to the BF EVO forum, would someone tell me what scale the figures are going to be and what scakle the vehicles are going to be?
Some shots look like the vehicles are 1:64 and the figures 1:50 odd.
Cheers

They're 1/64 scale, or was that 1/65? Around there though.

Actually, the minis won't sell that much to collectors. So don't market them to collectors. Don't put them next to warhammer and warmachine, etc... Instead put them next to Mageknight, Star Wars Minis, Dreamblade, Heroscape, etc...

This way the gamers associate it with those kind of pickup and play games.

Then, make sure you demo the rules, the rules are great and is one of the bigger draws of the game. Yes, the quality of the current minis are below what some dedicated miniature gamers expect, but to people used to the paints of Star Wars and the like, it's equal if not better. Not only that, how many of those disappointed wargamers actually have a fully painted army?

I personally think the minis look fine. Ive been a fan of the SST rule system for ages, but noone around here would touch the stuff. Its nice to be able to actually use them in a game that people around here are playing.

Actually I think just the opposite. Most of the gamers that drop a lot of cash at my LGS won't touch the Clix stuff with a ten foot pole. It's hard enough explaining that BF:Evo are prepainted wargame models, not collectable bendy plastic, without giving the visual association as well.

Either way they are great potential for getting new folks into gaming! Especially the ones that are scared to paint (they'll learn in time...)

Our store has the minis and I've ravenously torn into mine and looked through all of the other sets in stock. As many have said they are smaller than expected, but for the size the detail is actually much better than expected from the original pics of Wave 1. If they improve Wave 2+ to the levels anticipated these will blow every other pre-painted mini series out of the water. The eyes are buggy on most of them and I would have preferred dark "spots" rather than attempting the whites.

Sculpt quality: 90%
These are far above HeroClix, Star Wars, D&D and others, but no match for the detail of something like Reaper or Rackham's fantasy minis. The soldiers have a fair amount of detail on them for their size, but many of the vees are a bit too "rounded" on the edges and lack a bit on detail. Maybe I've been spoiled by metal minis.

Paint quality: 85%
They are just slightly under par on what I can do myself. The eyes need to be retouched and the gay blue on the weapon scopes, helmet lenses and vehicle lights has to go. Still I'm quite thrilled not having to paint the majority of the minis. If I weren't so anal they could probably be left alone.

Price: 75%
Due to their small size, they are currently at about the mid to high end of what I'd be willing to pay for them. They are more expensive that WotC products, but you avoid the need to buy via random draw so it's actually cheaper. If they were 15-20% cheaper I'd probably buy into multiple armies. As is, I'm going to flush out my core army and just invest in enough for a single demo opponent.

Varienty of sculpts: 65%
All units have duplicates. The MEA have a variety of color on the clothing but for the PLA, USMC and EFTF you have ZERO way to tell the difference in duplicates unless you mark them on the bases yourself. Duplicates are on par to other games and isn't the main issue, its the lack of distinct markers makes for unncessary work on a prepainted product.

Rules Quality and Ease of Play: 105%
The game is simple enough for newbies to pick up, but strategic enough for hold hacks to have fun with. The game plays quickly and has plenty of balance. Highly recommend demos for anyone on the fence.

Okay well maybe put them between the clix section and the big wargame section.

Of course, the best way to tell the minis is to always have a table with armies already set up to play.

I'm also working on a conversion of several game systems to work with the evolution rules. The hope is I can convince some friends to play SST via these rules. Already have the beginnings of a decent conversion for Space Marines. Although space marines fighting earth marines wouldn't be fair, it's all in preparation for when SST comes out. If anything it gets people used to the rules.

I just picked up a couple of boxes myself and I'm gonna have to eat a little crow here. The figures a nice... nicer than I expected, and my firebreathing at the original production photos seems a little lame to me now  . I am glad MG got these right. Pretty nice painting for figures of this size. Good job, Mongoose. I'm sold.

I can assure you that Wave 2 is better still, so if you're pleased now you'll be delighted then. :)

Ok that's great, but I'd like all my figures to look the same sort of standard, so what's the incentive to buy wave 1 figures now if they might better at some future point? :)

Just belted down to my local Travelling man to have a gander at the figs for myself! Wow... Ok so I can paint much better quality myself but these figs are far better than I was hoping for in a prepaint. I'm a little disappointed by the Shiney look of the Challenger's paint scheme but It's still really nice.

They actually had a set of Marines and MEA out of the box so you could have a look at them and I was impressed by the paint schemes up close. Loving the PLA, definately buying into a large army of these!!!

Shame I'm skint so I couldn't get any there and then! :(

Nice one Mongoose Great product. :D

i sprayed dull coat on my tanks last night, gets rid of the shiny look, tht said i sparayed on to much and forgot to turn heating on last night so some frosted up a little,,stupid me.
