I'm not sure. I'm having enough trouble just trying to think of science fiction settings with both slug and energy pistols in them!

Stargate is about the only one that occurs.

The second person is principally a superlative engineer and computer scientist, but he's a scientist, not a naval or military engineer (so not, say, Geordi La Forge from Star Trek).

He's too competent in a scrap to be Harper from Andromeda.
