adaptive armour for me, prefer passive defenses like that due to being crap at dodge and interceptor rolls.

I find I like the active defense, interceptor/dodge/high stealth best, with defenses that scale up well next, GEG.

The fixed defenses AA/shields can be too easily planned for, no chance to roll up. And against beam rolling up, the only defense is dodge.

As to the shoot first defense, guess playing league I don't win initiative enough.
