Family Pic: Free Far And Fat Trader

Cosmic Mongoose
Well continuing my little project....here's all three in a group photo. will put them in a scene at some point as soon as I can get a cup of coffee and concentrate.

I took some liberties with the Fat Trader, gave it a more streamlined look, and stretched the hull. it can't hold outsized cargoes as well but it is roll-on-roll off capable and has a sleeker appearance.

Man, I am loving what you are doing with those intakes... Free Trader included.

Thanks. I thought they looked pretty good, so I ran with them. if ya gonna skim fuel you need some sort of intake.

The middle one looks a bit... squished? I suppose it wouldn't if I wasn't familiar with the 'more plump' version :)

Here is the beefier version of the far trader

even with slightly larger drive pods it looks a little underpowered compared to the thinner version.

I really like the Fat Trader, but the Empress Marava is too thin and squarish, it's a two deck design after all.

I'm more used to something like this:

,
although the overhead spoiler is way over the top...

The Fat Trader doesn't live up to its name, it's very sleek. Is it really twice the volume of the other ships?

The Marava is about right for volume by my measurements. If I make it any thicker, or longer it will go over by a bit. The squarish look was a style choice I wanted it to look more like a working vessel. I already had the sporty stylish Free trader so I went with a more solid, practical style for the Empress Marava. If it's too far out of the look..just consider it a competing"looks Like a Marava" design...

As far as I can tell the Fat trader is near to scale, the wings and nacelles make it hard to properly calculate volume based on the in program measurements. I'll double check all the measurements and tweak if I need to.

The Fat trader is a bit more streamlined by design. I was looking at the older versions and while I like them as ships ..they are ungainly and would fly like a drunken duck in atmo. So you might ant to consider this an Improved Subsidized trader. While gravitics and fly by wire systems can handle the aerodynamic issues with the older look, it would be a beast if you had any sort of malfunction in your flight systems...So.....I just couldn't help myself so I reworked it a bit to look more aerodynamic.

The Fat Trader usually comes with a launch. Other than that, I like your takes on the design. Looks a bit more futuristic than the originals (which is good).

the launch will have to wait for a bit...when I get it done I'll add it tot he pic.

Thanks for the compliment I was trying for just that look.

Okay, I was wondering what happened. Makes sense now - I think! ;)

And take your time adding it in. You're doing well and doing it right.

That is actually a picture of a Jayhawk, which I believe was introduced during "Traveller: the New Era" which does have the exact same stats as a Marava. I myself prefer the Jayhawk look over the Marava looks, but with that spoiler it should be faster.

It's probably one of those cheap aftermarket spoilers the owner put on so it would look cool....

I am not that familiar ith the New Era material.

Yes, sorry that is a TNE-era Jayhawk.

My problem is, I think, that most of the Marava is a dual deck design, but the bridge and owner's cabin protruding from the front are single deck, so should not be the same height.

The airlocks on the sides of the ship are on the upper deck, just forward of the hardpoints, they should probably not be the full height of the ship, but in the upper half of the hull.

Note that the original deck plans are way too big for a 200 dT ship, more like 400 - 500 dT. The deck plans are actually larger than the Fat Trader. I always thought it was a bit weird to let the bridge have a good view into the captain's private cabin.

I had some issues with the numbers scale being off when I was working with the deckplans....I thought I was making a mistake with my numbers.

I reworked thing a little and came up with this design. I still need to work on some details but it's looking pretty good so far.

If you really wanted the scale correct you would have to multiply width and length by 0.7, but then the deck plans becomes very cramped. It's probably better to leave it as is.

Yes, that looks like I have imagined it!

Maybe smooth out the hull a bit?

I think both decks are about the same width?

The forward bridge and captain's cabin should only stick out about 5 m, 10% of the total hull length?

You need at least two stories for cargo hauling.

Unless the cargo piggybacks.

You could get away with a single deck hold. but you would loose the ability to carry standardized shipping containers and have to make due with loose pack cargo, or 1dton containers. Which would be fine for a a mail boat,or supply ship but not the best idea for someone who wanted to carry bulk cargoes.

Okay cleaned t up a little and repositioned the entry hatch and gun turrets to the lower deck as shown in some deckplans. Added some windows to the passenger area so the common area has a nice view when the ship is in normal space.

If I were going to rework the deck plans I'd move the tanks and drives to either side of the cargo bay, opening the cargo bay up tot he second level and install a large ramp at the rear so oversized loads could be carried. with a smaller ramp at teh front so you could do roll on roll off loading to speed up turnaround....anybody any good at deckplans??? mine look awful
