Everybody's Character

Vaarl Svengarrsen Norheimer Soldier/Barbarian (Pugulist)

Vaarl was literally the "wall" of the party. 22 Con, Hard as Rock against Piercing and Slashing, he wore what ammounted to over 100 pounds of steel as armor. Used a MW chain shirt, MW, breastplate, MW Bracers (+1 DR, -1 ACP, no penalty as MW), MW greaves (same as bracers), MW Visor Helm, MW War Cloak (Chainmail cloak that was effectively a small shield that gave +2 DR, but wieghted 25 pounds). Final DR was 13, DR 19 vs piercing or slashing. His dodge AC was somewhere in the 6-7 range... but he didn't really care. The GM and I agreed to impliment the minimum 1 subdual damage rule because he went through a fight that killed 2 PCs and mauled the rest of them and took no damage, including two crits.

He made me smile, since we ended up often using Vaarl as a human wall often enough and he enjoyed the whole "making of a legend" he was working on.

How the hell does all of that stack?

Greaves and bracers stack with Chain shirt, leather, or padded. If you wear both it's counted as medium armor. A breastplate makes it Heavy armor. A warcloak (we house ruled) increases the category one more to extra-heavy. The movement penalties mean that you have a base move of 15' (3 squares) and cannot run. Basically we took the rules for piecemeal armor from Darksun and the rules for bracers and greaves from Oriental Adventures. the only out of place item there is the bracers and greaves actually. The rest stacks normally (the warcloak being nothing more than a shield that gives half its parry to DR, just like if you strap a shield to your back and wield one.)

Mind you the cost is prohibitive to get it MW... The braces and greaves are each 50 Silvers, the Helm is 450, the Breastplate 2000, the Chain shirt is 100 and the warcloak is 500. Now add that up and triple it... it's 9450 SP. 9500 when I included a waterproofed Zingaran sealskin padding under it.

I paid for a chunk of it by a real lucky kill: we were doing the black kingdoms adventures and when we entered the temple guarded by the giant apes we got into the room with the huge albino ape. My character made his will save, power attacked for max, crimson misted and charged it. I crited for nearly 50 points of damage (2d12+30 damage total, ed result was something near 50) and the ape got a nat 1 on its massive damage save. One hit kill and the GM rules the corpse was still in near perfect condition so I skinned it after the fight and sold the hide for a nice 4K, which the party let me have due to the one on one nature of the kill.

That's how I bought most of the stuff, except for the breastplate. We found that later on in a treasure trove.

He also once de-flowered the virgin sacrifice of a priest to disrupt the ritual while the rest of us were fighting...
Now that is a smart trick.

The bardiche-wielding Cimmerian barbarian in my group did pretty much exactly the same. A couple of rounds later the Bossonian soldier scored a critical with his bow which also ended up at around 50 points of damage. Fun times. :)
