I agree. That is one of the fun things I liked about the d66 Compendiums I bought recently. Yes they work as a great source to quickly select names etc when needed. But they also have proved to be a great source for small hints, ideas, and hooks. I read an entry and the idea germinates and grows in my brain. You just never know where a great hook and adventure idea might come from.
A neutral, potential adversary I use in one game...sentient, artifact, bio-vessel with a truly antisocial streak toward any vessel it considers a "Predator" it's probably going to be wearing a nice new suit of bio armor next time I use it. I really need to redo that model ....
You can turn a Black Globe off, or flicker it. This armour just absorbs energy til it explodes. Just concentrate energy weapons and meson guns on it til it can't take anymore.
There you go. The trick is to overwhelm it by pouring in more power than it can shed. And the only way to do that is the hard way - to hit it with everything you've got.
In Star Fleet Battles, the Andromedans used a similar technology instead of shields. If you didn't have enough power to overwhelm their power absorbtion panels then all you were doing was providing them free energy to power their weapons and engines.
The Achilles heel of their defense was that if you COULD overwhelm them before they could bleed it all off ever turn was that the panels would explode, and the energy released would have to be absorbed by the other panels. If you were lucky you could cause a cascading reaction that essentially had the ship destroying itself. It's a great defense and had some significant advantages. But it also had some that weren't so. What you find is that races will tend to use tech suited to the way they fight, and what some see as a weakness they just accept as the norm. Not everyone is going to build balanced ships (which have their own strengths/weaknesses). Just look at humanity over the ages and the various ideas and concepts we consider (in 20/20 hindsight) to be "stupid".
I remember a few settings where the shields becoming overloaded was a spectacular event...it would begin to randomly discharge energy inward, then BOOM!
almost any armor or defense has a down side... the bio-armor might be very effective but can you imagine how a contagion getting into the system would affect the ship?
