Earth-Centauri War - Report!

Not much I can say that hasn't been said already - I got spanked, six games and lost them all to a combination of bad luck, broken cheesy Gaim, broken G'Vrahn and absurd dice rolls on the parts of my opponents. I honestly don't think there was anything I could have done to win most of my games - I might have had the planetary assault against LBH if I'd realised he was daft enough to leave the planet totally undefended! I could have blitzed past with my Demos pair and taken the planet and won the game.

As it was, I lost every game, but in my defence, the G'Vrahn is too good for its level and the cheese Gaim were literally unbeatable. I think I was assigned some duties better suited to other fleets but that's hindsight. The way it was on the ground, I did my duty for the Republic.

I was the aforementioned press liason officer and received a medal courtesy of ISN for my trouble. I was also fed some cash now and again on the QT, but like a good officer I handed it to the admiral rather than hoarding it and replairing my fleet.

Overall it was a good weekend, some demoralising losses that really highlighted the weaknesses of the Centauri fleet and the strengths of others. I also saw firsthand how broken the Gaim really are.

Thanks to everyone for an enjoyable weekend and for making my first ACTA event...... memorable.

I'd like to apologies to the Centauri regime for failing in my duty to protect Centauri prime in the first game, and also to Triggy (the EA admiral) for his totally unrelated donation to the Drazi widows and orphans fund shortly before that event

I'd also like to assure all people currently resident on Earth that the change in government was a virtually bloodless event and that your new Drazi, Gaim and Drakh protectors, along with our freedom loving independent military consultants (no, their not Raiders, honest) will be working alongside our new friends in Psi Corps to ensure a safe and pleasant future for all (happiness is mandatory!) Any difficulty will only be temporary.

Tom, emperor of the New Drazi colonies and pleasure resort, formerly South America.

p.s. due to replacement bus services, several closed underground trains and a short delay on the regular train service I arrived home 2 hours EARLIER than scheduled!

It was indeed generally a fun event, but there were a few things that I think could be improved. I think the Admeral's should get a lower priority ship if done in future, as when the Armagedon ships turn up they tend to end the game effectivly for the opposition. Also I would resrict the ability to enter other tables, again 2 battle points entering anywhere on table via hyperspace is to much and generallly spoils the game, I would recomend a single battle point on a table edge and theat it could then not be used in your next battle as it would be out of position.
The scenarios were unfortunatley repetative, I did Recon twice as defender, no fun as soon as your scanned the game is over, these tended to be over very quickly, I also defended the supply convoy twice again very hard to win as there are a lot of easy points to pick up for the supply ships.

The Gaim were pointless as most peple's tactics seemed to involve delaying them for a turn or two and then getting the hell out of there and on the Hyperspace table they were made even more powerful!

My oponnents were all excellent and it was good to play a nice mix of fleets.

I enjoyed the weekend, but if I'd had an Adira/Victory turn up in three of my six games it would have made for some miserable games.

I don't quite see how the Gaim were pointless? no-one had a particularly real chance of beating them without a huge ton of luck. they were annoying.. people did delaying tactics to help their teams and prevent Gaim appearing and turning battles on other tables!
this isn't the fault of the Gaim players... although one fleet was cheesy beyond that stuff between my toes...

By pointless all I mean is if you were drawn against them you were not likely to have an enjoyable game, at times even Ben looked bored moving his 150 plus fighter counters. I just think the event wouldf have been better without those fleets. As one of the players was just using phopocopied paper counters he could by the same token easily taken any other fleet

well yeah, but that was his choice, most people picked fun(ish) fleets, Ben alas picked an uber cheese fleet

Overall, an excellent weekend... I had fun in just about every game, and fortunately enough didn't face the bane of enjoyment fleet (Gaim) even once... which I am extremely thankful for!

I played on the Centauri side, and managed four wins out of six, and reinforced Centauri prime twice to make sure we managed to hold it in the final stages of the campaign.

My fleet was comprised of:-

2 Liatis
1 Secundus (Mass Driver)
2 Elutarians
1 Balvarin (2xRasik, 6xSentri)
2 Corvans

Game 1:- Team battle... Narn and EA vs Drakh and Centauri (LOST)

Drakh Fleet:
1 Heavy Cruiser
1 Strike Cruiser
1 Scout
4 Light Destroyers

EA Fleet:
2 Apollos
1 Omega
1 Marathon
4 Chronii

Narn Fleet:
1 G'Vrahn
2 Dag'Kars
2 Var'Nics
2 G'Kariths

This one went right down to the wire, we only managed two turns, as this was effectively a 10pt Battle game, which meant time was at a premium. The EA and Narn concentrated their fire on the left flank of our fleets, which was unfortunately occupied by most of my ships :? after trading hits for a while, we destroyed a Marathon at the cost of a Secundus and an Elutarian. The G'Vrahn jumped in, only to be confronted by the Drakh heavy Cruiser, 2 Light Cruisers and a pair of Liatis.

Everything opened up, and the Narn floating fortress took a heavy pounding, leaving it with only one crew member left on board. Unfortunately for the Republic, the second Liati was unable to get the G'Vrahn into it's front arc, so could only fire it's Ion cannon, which scored one hit with the final shot of the game, but hit a bulkhead, so the Narn vessel lived to fight another day!

Second Game:- Team battle, 3rd Age Ea (x2) vs Centauri (x2) (WON)

EA fleets (combined):

2 Warlocks
3 Omegas
2 Novas
1 Avenger
1 Oracle
2 Olympus

Centauri Fleet (combined):

4 Liatis
1 Secondus
2 Dargans
2 Elutarians
1 Balvarin
1 Demos
2 Morgraths
2 Corvans

Another game short on turns, I think we managed two again. Most of the opening exchanges were fairly even on turn one, but the fireworks started to fly in turn two when the two EA warlocks jumped in behind the Centauri fleet. Unfortunately for them, a squadron comprised of 2 Liatis and 2 Morgraths turned up directly behind one of the mighty warships (which had an 8 dice front beam  ) and promptly melted it to slag with one volley. We lost a Dargan and an Elutarian while managing to destroy a Nova and cripple another without any further losses to either side.

Overall, a fun game, but I did feel a bit bad for Low Roller... it's never good to see your War ship torn in half without getting to fire it.

Third Game: 3rd Age EA vs Centauri (LOST)

EA Fleet:

1 Warlock
1 Omega
1 Avenger
2 Olympus
1 Oracle
(Could have been a Nova here, too... can't remember)

From turn 2: 1 Victory

This game started well for me, but ended up very badly... I won deployment and initiative in the first turn, and managed to advance my Liatis around the planet in the centre of the table, and avoid most of my fleet being boresighted (apart from one unfortunate Elutarian which was blown apart with one beam shot from the 'lock) and managed to cripple the Omega in reply with the combined fire from my Liatis, blowing out it's engines as well.

I was feeling good about the game at this point, as I now had my main punch in behind my opponent's fleet, and could safely out init sink the Warlock's boresight, so my fleet should have been able to avoid most of the EA's punch and strike with impunity.

However, a jump point ominously opened on my left flank, and a Victory emerged to change the course of the game beyond recognition. Triggy's huge ISA craft opened up it's front Neutron cannon upon the unfortunate Secundus and blew it to bits... this was followed by the surviving Elutarian being crippled, while my Liatis finished off the crippled Omega. At this point, I could have tried to run (in fact, I opened a jump gate with the Balvarin, but it became crippled before it could escape, and lost it's jump engines) but I decided to try to tie the Victory up for a couple of turns, so the EA and Triggy couldn't reinforce another table.

The Liati's sped past the planet again, and managed to get the 'lock lined up with their beams, seriously damaging it without managing to cripple it. The Victory then used the planet's gravity well to slingshot itself around to fire on one of the Liati's, destroying it with the one beam hit I didn't manage to dodge (Triggy rolled a 6/5 crit, then 10 on the 2d6 damage, trippled to 30... ouch) The Balvarin stood down and was boarded by the Avenger, and the crippled Elutarian was finished off, leaving me with only one Liati and a pair of Corvans... both of the scouts ran away, while the Liati took cover from the EA fleet behind a dust cloud, tying the rest of the fleet up as the seconds ran out.

Day 2:-

Game Four, Crusade EA vs Centauri (WON)

EA fleet:
1 Marathon
2 Apollos
1 Omega
4 Chronii

This was the best and most enjoyable game of the weekend for me... it went right down to the wire and each fleet had it's moments in the acendency. My opponant was extremely sporting, and we both used our fleets to their best advantage.

I was initially down one Raid point, as our forces were a bit skint, and katadder couldn't afford to fully reinforce my heavy losses from the previous game. I did offer to take fewer reinforcement points, and leave the Secundus out, but he insisted that I take the extra money, which in hindsight I am extremely grateful for!

As the fleets closed, the EA managed to destroy one of my Elutarians, while the Liatis screamed forward on my left flank, firing upon the Omega and blowing out it's engines. The game then became a bit of a furball, with everything swarming around the centre of the table with the Liatis dancing through the centre of the EA fleet, destroying the Marathon on their way past, before finishing off the Omega.

The Secundus launched it's breaching pods, one of which latched onto a Chronos, and after heavy fighting, the Centauri marines finished off the defending EA troops while back in space, a heavy exchange of fire was taking place between the entangled fleets. I lost a Liati and my other Elutarian, but managed to destroy an Apollo in return. The Chronii surrounded the Secundus and let fire with their rail guns and heavy pulse cannon, crippling it without destroying it, at which point the battle drew to a close, with me just coming out ahead on victory points and feeling rather elated!

Game 5: Crusade EA vs Centauri (WON)

This was a rematch between the same two fleets, but some extremely lucky dice rolling on my part saw that the game was really decided in my favour in the first turn of firing, when I managed to destroy the Marathon with one beam shot from a Liati (6/6 crit... ouch) and blow the engines out on the Omega with the other Liati... twice... with one shot  After destroying an Apollo shortly afterwards, I accepted my opponent's offer to withdraw, as I'd still lost nothing at this point and wanted to help out on my homeworld.

I jumped my Liatis over to Centauri prime, where the Drakh were enmeshed in a brawl with the ISA. Again, lucky dice rolling on my part saw first one Whitestar go up in smoke as the Ion cannon from one Liati opened fire, while the plasma accelerator severely damaged another 'star.

The luckiest shot of the day for me was yet to come, though, as my second Liati managed to destroy the almost undamaged Tara'Lin (i think it'd only taken 5 points of damage at this point...) with one beam shot (11 hits + another 6/6 crit=dead Sharlin  ) at this point, the game was called, and Centauri prime stayed in our hands as the final game arrived.

Game 6 Narn vs Centauri (WON)

Narn Fleet
G'Vrahn
G'Lan
Var'Nic
Dag'Kar
G'Karith
Thentus
Ka'Toc

This game was decided for us before it really got going... and to be honest, my brain was flagging at this point (2 hours sleep + a full day gaming really messed me up a bit... ended up stopping to sleep in my car on the way home, and only got in at 10:45, which is why I'm posting this so late!) and I kept trying to do things I couldn't (2 special actions at once, firing more than one weapon system on closed blast doors) fortunately, my opponent stopped me each time before I made a complete idiot out of myself, and I didn't actually do anything illegal during the game.

This was very quick, anyway... it only lasted one turn as katadder's Adira was about to jump in behind the G'Vrahn on turn 2, and rather th seeing his fleet destroyed by it for the third time, my opponent withdrew, leaving me to jump onto C. Prime again to help Hiff's Drakh out against Triggy's EA.

Again, my brain was a bit frazzled, and this game was extremely hectic, so I can't really recall much other than we had both Admirals (Greg & katadder), a big Drakh fleet, a Crusade EA fleet and my Liatis on the table all at once. Lots of stuff blew up, and we emerged with the game in hand, but only just... maybe one of the other players remembers it better than me

Final thoughts:

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable time, I thought we had no chance after day one, but we managed to turn things round quite well, just failing to clinch victory from the EA scum  I will say though, that nobody that I talked to over the course of the weekend enjoyed playing against the EA's pet Gaim fleet (that also apparently bankrolled the EA's recovery after they'd taken *extremely* heavy losses across the board in the penultimate game... doesn't really seem to be in the spirit of a mercenary fleet to me, but I suppose everyone has their own interpretation of how hired guns should act)

Roll on the next event... can't wait to see the details of the mongoose doubles tournament!

The trouble is, being reduced to spectator status by turn 2 in 3 out of 6 games, when you came to play games doesn't really make for an fun weekend of gaming! Whilst I understand the idea behind giving the Grand Admirals a role to play in the game, the ability for an Armageddon level ship to appear directly behind an entire enemy fleet means that a 5pt Battle game becomes an exhibition and not a competitive or compelling game.

I think that the Admirals flagship should have been a Battle level vessel with a "Rule Book Admiral" on board, and some restrictions on how they can be deployed to a table. That way they could be used to tip the balance on an important strategic target, and not just to sweep aside an irrelevance just to free up a fleet to support elsewhere - having this happen in 50% of your games just leaves a bad taste in your mouth (quite literally! - something I'd never actually experienced before!).

On the Gaim..... I'd never actually faced the Gaim before but I'd obviously heard the view that it doesn't generally make for an interesting game. "Time to play the Gaim....." (cue Motorhead!)

For me, the Gaim turned up on game 2 on a table where "Hyperspace Storms" rules were in effect. To summarize these rules, everything fighting under these conditions becomes Stealth 4+ (even if you natural had higher stealth) and at the end of every turn you needed to make a 6+ crew quality check in order to maintain a lock on the hyperspace beacons - fail this and the ship can continue to fight on, but is considered "lost" from a campaign persective. Firing weapons, performing special actions, being cripped all had negative modifiers to this roll, though you would generally get a re-roll.

So, facing the Gaim on this table meant you gained nothing (4+ stealth really means nothing against a fleet solely armed with e-mines - the Gaim of course benefit from Stealth for everything other than a couple of SL e-mines!) and with a standard CQ4 vs Gaim CQ5 on the hyperspace beacon locks, it isn't going to make for an interesting game for either party - so much so that my Grand Admiral Triggy bought off the Gaim at the very start to inflict "a battle point or less" in damage! This never actually came to pass, since I jumped out of hyperspace after destroying a couple of waves of fighters and losing a ship to the vagaries of hyperspace beacons!

Personally, I'd have had the two Gaim forces fighting against each other on that table for 6 games, because it might just as well have been purpose built for them! :)

So to summarize, I actually played two competitive games (which were both fun) and I was essentially "involved" in the deployment and a spectator for the other 4 games. This may sounds like whinging (believe me it isn't!), but I mention it purely because the whole point of the campaign was to play games and have fun , so from my perspective, due to the Grand Admiral mechanics, it was only 33% successful in this regard - whilst I obviously prefer winning to losing, I'd much rather "play" and lose but have a fun game, than win and not have fun, or worse still, not play at all!

I would however like to thank my opponents, and I doff my cap to Katadder who I honestly think played a blinder (tactically speaking!) as Centauri Grand Admiral! If I wasn't Narn and blinded by racial hatred, I'd have probably offered to switch sides! :)

Just my thoughts!

Dave

EA won. nice to of seen new faces and meet your customers...... the Gaim were very nasty to go with and Jim there was a nova.

mind you did lose your fleet carrier to an Avenger's SA .

1st day I used the drakh mothership as my flagship thinking a mini fleet would be useful, however due to the shortness of most games by the time everything was launched we didnt accomplish much.

1st game i jumped in against foxmeister who promptly jumped what he could out but still left us a G'vrahn to kill.

Game 2 I started alongside another drakh player as a punishment beating for the drazi who had betrayed us at centauri prime (this was promised him previous game if he did betray us). After killing 2 firehawks for no drakh losses i figured the drakh could take the system (how wrong i was) so left to join Hiffano who was facing LBH and Triggys victory. however by the time I jumped in Hiffano had the game in hand with Triggy nearly dead (only turrets left, no SAs, no DC etc etc) and half the damage off the taralin. However before he could finish the job time was up and we lost on victory points.

Game 3 I tried to help out versus the minbari. The mothership jumped in and effectively crippled a morshin with a broadside but that was about the whole contribution of the drakh due to not passing stealth most the time. the Minbari however still lost most of their ships so it worked out well for us.

day 2 I changed my flag to an Adira to try and encourage my centauri minions
game 4 we had to retake Centauri Prime this day so I jumped in turn 2 and killed a G'vrahn in one shot before it could even fire (sorry foxmeister). The Victory came in on the opposite side of the board giving Hiffano another crack at it. we managed to wipe out all the Narn apart from the G'lan which fled at the sight of the Adira. Also more importantly Hiff finally managed to bag the victory. although the victory did one lucky shot before it died crippling the Adira (4AD beam, around 16 hits and 6 crits including a 6,6).

game 5 I decided it was time to take Earth. so whilst my brave allies held up bens gaim on an adjacent table I supported daboss in his assault against low roller. on coming out the JP my beam failed dramatically, resulting in the execution of the beam gunners, this made the rest of the crew better and the matter cannons and ioncannon wrecked the heart of the EA fleet. we eventually won this with the EA escapig with just one nova. the adira had taken about 5 weapon crits by this point by roving fighters.

game 6 and it was back to centauri prime making triggy turn half his fleet around to my JP and the victory pointing a JP at me. on this i went elsewhere and much as i didnt want to jump foxmeister again i needed centauri reinforcements from there so jumped him, he jumped out and allowed me to bring 2 liatis back to centauri prime with me. it was close fought game, however by the end the EA had just one explorer, a nearly dead chronos and a victory that could only fire on 4+ with 2 less AD as well as being adrift. with enough time we would have bagged another grand admiral.
also by game 6 the Adira and the biggest ship in each Drakh fleet had 5AD of heavy bolters on the front, the drakh strike cruisers all had GEG3 but our best performing ships with the GEG2 Liatis, all 5 scattered through the centauri fleets had this upgrade.

my thanks to all centauri players and everyone else for an enjoyable weekend.

It was an enjoyable weekend :D .

My Drakh Fleet

War Level Cruiser (ended up with 12 extra damage, 38 range beam, +1 to break stealth, Heavy Bolters and extra pulse cannons) - Only to be killed by LBH lucky beam hit in the last game.

Strike Cruiser with a nice scout

Carrier with 2 Light and 2 Heavy Raiders

2 Light Cruisers.

Did okay won 2. All on Orion against those barbaric pouchling Narns (even with reinforcements). I liked my little Drakh fleet and it did well.

First Game (Supply Ships)

Played Greg (good friend) vs his Psi Corp Fleet.

Greg won scenario but lost a Shadow Hunter in response. My losses were 0.

Second Game (Supply Ships)

Played Ken (good friend) vs his sneakie Minbari.

Ken won scenario but lost a ship (if memory serves me right). My looses were 0.

Third Game (Space Superiority)

Played Dave with his Narn

Held Orion for the Centauri. Was only thing we held that turn. Even with Narn reinforcements the glorious Drakh held Orion with minimal losses (1 battle point worth)

Fourth Game (Space Superiority)

Played Shane with his Narn

Held Orion again :D . Hurting a lot of nice Narn ships. Even with Minbari reinforcements the Drakh controlled most of the area.

Fith Game (Planetary Assault)

Played vs ex admiral Triggys EA Crusade fleet.

With no hope of winning the planet just went for killing ships.
Did well :-).

Triggy won scenario but the price was high for Earth Force (3 battle points to my 1)

Game 6 (Call to Arms)

Played Derinas 3rd Age Earth Force.

It was going well with lots of hurt EA ships. The LBH came in with his advanced jump engines and killed my big bad cruiser :( .

Earth Force won on points (thanks to LBH). I lost 3.5 battle points worth.

I enjoyed all my games win or lose. It was a great weekend . Thanks to all involved and I hope that the Drakh / Centauri food was appreciated for the Mongoose Command Staff and the ISN War Correspondant. (Not that this was bribery or corruption).

Another idea.

The fleets should be in the spirit of the game and that they should be fun to play against. Maybe Mongoose can vet Gaim Fleets as the fleet as it stands is broken.

Fighting against them is boring and moving all those counters for Gaim Fighters must get so boring doing that.

I would allow Gaim fleets if they have fighter mnis... no counters or photocopies ;)
If you want to play pure gorgonzola you should put in the cash and time to make it.

well would be nice if Ben ever turned up with counters he hadnt taken from Vassal :D actual Gaim ships, like the other Gaim player had. I know LBH doesnt bring ships either but he does actually own all the ships he uses counters for, i dont think Ben even owns a ship.

My games:

1. vs. ISA (breaking their neutrality in a typically traitorous fashion) - I think I was actually winning this until the Victory turned up and blew one of my battleships away. Had the game gone on a little longer (literally the time it took for him to roll his dodges) I might still have had time to bring this back to a draw.

2. vs Earth Alliance - a much nicer fleet than the one I'd been practising against when playing swiss tony: 2 Apollos, a Marathon, an Omega and 4 Chronos completed the mix. I blew away 2 Chronos, the marathon and the Omega (which had front arc beams - nasty!) and was beating up the Apollos when the Bens Gaim turned up and lost me the game (as it was table quarters he took two of them easily). As soon as the Gaim were coming, our grand admiral gave me the opportunity to fall on my sword for the greater good, holding up the Gaim. Fortunately the EA were not up to the challenge and my losses were fairly light. The EA player was a great guy to play against and I look forward to a rematch.

3. vs Narn - This game went horribly wrong from the start. Playing supply ships in defense I had to start spread out against an equal number of points of enemy who could come on from any side. They turned up, picked on a bunch of ships, crippling one and with a lucky crit blowing another up, as well as a couple of freighters. Practically this put me a battle point behind without me firing a shot. Next turn saw two of my battleships get badly shot-up, lucky crits taking out the weapons systems on one so I couldn't even kill a single ship that turn. After this I cut and ran, only managing to get one battleship and the corvan off the table. Hated the setup as it favoured the attackers and the Narn players luck with his crits was amazing.

4. paired game vs. EA and Bens Gaim in Hyperspace. Once again, the Admiral gave me the opportunity to fall on my sword, so long as it held the Gaim up. Once again the EA were not up to the challenge, we only lost one battle point in total. Our main aim was not to get close and risk our ships against the fighter horde (it'd also be nice if Ben had known his own fleets rules). Worst game of the tournament by a long way, and I think thats true for all three of us who weren't Gaim. At one point I helped out moving the fighters and I got bored after moving thirty or so.

5. vs Narn. Recon run on the defensive. God the G'Vrann is a beast of a ship! It cut apart two of my ships on its own before it went down to massed firepower. On a first count I won by 0.5 of a point so went after the other G'Vrann. However Dave made a quick recounting and actually took the game by 0.5 of a point, despite being wiped out in 3 turns. Very unfortunate as I was by then in the middle of hunting the other G'Vrann on the next table. It would have been sweet revenge to take out both monsters in one game!

6. vs ISA and Recon run on the defensive again. So, I move, He runs on and scans me, gaining vp. by the end of the movement phase, he has 2.5 battle points scored, and I can only score 3 points total. He shoots first and kills a ship. So for the second game of the weekend I haven't fired a shot but am already so far behind I can't win. Turn 2, I move a ship, he moves a ship, scans me and runs everyone else away. Hes won and I could only kill 2 raid level ships. This sudden death kind of game is terrible in a tournament as it destablised not only my game, but the game the ISA jumped into. We didn't have them try to break stealth on my Corvan to scan, which maybe was a mistake?

Overall, had the Victory show up once, the Gaim twice and two games where victory had effectively been decided before I fired a shot. As for enjoyment: 2 good games, 2 average games, 2 bad games (gaim in Hyperspace, and the last one).

Lord David the Denied said:
How did the ISA manage to scan on turn one? My Demos had to lunge the full 21" on APtE just to get into range to scan, then they can't scan because they're on SA... :?

Given the tables were 4 feet wide, and scanning range is 12", and the "attacking" ships get to choose which table edge they come in on after the "defender" has deployed, surely at the very worst you'd only need to move 12" to scan something??? (and that would assume every ship was exactly 24" in from the long table edges).

Dave
