Duck book cover

Those are a fearsome band of ducks.
There's Co-duck of Hyboria, Sherduck Homes and Ara-duck the Ranger - sometimes known as 'Waddler'.

Is it possible to take Ducks seriously in a gaming group?

Those are a fearsome band of ducks.

Actually, from left to right...

A Canard Vagabond
A Muscovi Ducktown Guard
A Loon Barbarian
An Ivory Mallard Chaos Hunter (specifically a Stormbill)
A Canard Enlightened Duck
An unknown breed of Wyrmbill

And believe me when I say that this is a SMALL portion of what exists within the Durulz collective species. :)

Can ducks be taken seriously?

Yes, of course!

I have run a convention scenario with pregenerated characters several times where 5 out of 6 characters are ducks (the sixth one is a newtling). It is a serious approach on ducks.

The group of six live in duck valley, but suddenly a group of bounty hunters appears, and they have to flee to safety (exile in Prax).

The scenario (and the pregen characters) will appear in an upcoming issue of TRADETALK magazine.

104 pages is a bit short though.

Ducks are a bit short.
May be but there are thick thanks to their feathers and their layers of fat which is formidable to support cold and wet weather.

In fact Ducks can be played serioulsy. It all depends on your approach and I think Bry's book will contribute a lot to them being taken seriously as any other race because with such a cover, you know now you'll have to fight hard for your lunch and the meat will be too hard (sinewy) anyway.

Good, or bad?

What do YOU think?

Not impressed. I love the totem; think it's brilliant. Don't like the figure artwork though, looks like the same artist as the Lhankmar cover. The work is just as lumpen. It's also extremely cliched; take the stock fantasy archetypes and give them bills.

I also think that Mongoose cover designers have got themselves in awful mess; there's about 3 different fonts on the cover page and logos sprawled in odd places. Doesn't tie together at all. The idea is reasonable but it looks like the art was solicited based on one layout and has no been shoe-horned into a different one. Look at Ruins of Glorantha - the thumbnail cover version follows the old new design while if you expand it you get the new new design.

3 different fonts as in the 2 logos and the title font?

logos sprawled in odd places? bottom left and right.. i would say obvious/basic places but not odd?

With ruins what do you mean? the thumbnail is the newer layout but the link takes u to the older one. which do you prefer?

Yup, the title, the series logo and the system logo all appear to have nothing to do with each other. The logos are plonked in the bottom corners and there's been no obvious attempt to create an overall logic.

With Ruins, it's the other way around to what you think. The thumbnail shows the original redesign of the range with the Glorantha logo at the top while the link shows what is presumably the new design with the title at the top (same as the ducks).

It's hardly the end of the world, just amateurish.

I like the old design (with Glorantha on the top, and the title at the bottom) better than the new one.

Why change the layout NOW?
Change the layout when the approximate artwork is there, but don´t use new layout on old artwork. It doesn´t fit!

The new Glorantha layout has an ambiance with the text, if you notice the light coming from the top of the image towards the ruins, the title reflects this alot better than the glorantha logo, seems a waste to block out a key part of the illustration. although feedback generally is the deciding factor, if the majority prefer the old layout then maybe it might revert.

I gotta go with the old covers.

I like the idea of maximising the image, but the Glorantha logo, RQ logo, and title look like a bunch of unrelated elements thrown together and the end result isn't very clean.

Maybe something similiar to the old covers, but with the top and bottom borders and the Glorantha Logo significantly reduced would work.

Afraid I don't buy this. It looks to me as though the artist has designed the art around the presence of a fairly large logo in the top 3rd which is why the detail is in the bottom 2/3rds. To me te redesign makes the top look empty and the bottom look congested.

Clearly I have no special insight into this so I could be totally wrong about the artist's brief. I was never that keen on the old Gloranthan series borders and thought the original redesign with the floating logo was an improvement though it does demand more care in the art and logo placement and didn't leave an obvious place for the title. The new, new design is a case of "here's a picture and here's three things stuck on top of it."

It's good to see Mongoose having a look at it though.

It just prooves Mongoose is tainted by chaos. Who else would produce broos minis first and not even adventurers?

Another slight at the noble duck race, suggesting they cannot be adventurers :)

Miniatures:

You can get adventurers EVERYWHERE.
So it is very wise of Mongoose to produce only miniatures that are native to their gameworlds and are otherwise rare to find.

What we need next are plant-elves / Aldryami, Gloranthan Trolls / Uz, and MORE ducks!

Orlanthi, EWF or God Learners aren't just like any other common adventurers as they bear distinct signs of which side they belong to.
