Hello,

Am I understanding it correctly that Darkness Elementalists can access Fire, Earth, Water, and Air as subsidiary elements?

Their main category is then Darkness, and their subsidiary are all the others? None are barred from them?

A darkness elementalist (DE) must only choose two subsiduary elements from the four available. This choice is permament. Therefore, a DE could choose both Fire & Water as their two subsiduary elements (see Rulebook page 36).

Edit: I've just read this through again and realised that the stuff about normal elementalists not being able to have opposed subsiduary elements is garbage - sorry if it confused anyone!

This isn't very clear in the rules, but I can see how you are extrapolating those suggestions.
