Doctor Who/Torchwood

Well, if MGP do it it will probably be Runequest based (a system I'm not familiar with) but if it was D20 (or more likely OGL) it is possible. The B5 2ed with it's influence mechanic, 1-2 hp gain per level and a plethora of classes who should stay out of combat is a good example of a sci-fi D20 that's not completely action/adventure based.

Also everyone knows D20, but Ubiquity?

BTW Torchwood is about to start here in Australia - pity I've got the DVDs.

Wonder what the stats for a Dalek would be like

Well, that's an invite to speculation. Of course, it all depends on the system. And is the kaled one thing and the MkIII travel machine a piece of equipment or (as I see it) you treat the dalek as one single entity. Here are some useful stats....

DEX:8
Energy Weapons: 20; Melee Weapons: 10; Manouver; 10
STR:12
TOU:30
PER:13
Trick: 20
MIN:13
Test: 17
CHA:5
Taunt: 10
SPI:5
Intimidate: 20
Possibility rated? Yes. 5 possibilities
Tools: Dalek Blaster: Range 3-15/40/100, value 31; Manipulator: STR+2
Special: The dalek can fly. when airborne the dalek gains +10 to Manouvre and speed pushes as well as it's speed limit. Once a dalek is Heavily Wounded it's force shield is destroyed and its TOU is reduced to 20.

What system is that?
And how about some Doctor Who EVO stats?

A replica Erternity Shard to the first one to identify the system. As for the other

Dalek
Move: 4"
Size: 1
CC: d6
Target: 5+
Save: 2+
Kill: 8+
Special: Cannot be supressed. If a dalek performs a Ready Action for it's first action it may then move 12" ignoring terrain and shooting at any point of that move. (Once the aircraft rules are available it may perform a Ready Action to become an air unit).

Dalek Blaster
Range: 15
Damage: D6+2

Heh, I kind of knew that you would be the one. Have a Possibilty and a bonus card from the Drama Deck :D .

TORG: the guilty pleasure in my RPG collection. Always ready to have a run through the Possibilty Wars.

Runaway Bride on June 28th. Series 3 on 30th. At last!

Just had The Runaway Bride and Smith and Jones over here. At last!

Have to say that TRB wasn't as good as last year's Chrsitmas but S&J was a great opener - looking forward to The Shakespeare Code.

Makes me think of Doctor Who: Evolution as a potential project.

I think D20 and pretty much every version of D&D only works when you want to feel like you are playing a game. They seem to have become so popular because they were a common language and because they make sense as games. As simulations of almost all fiction, they have problems.

I could see someone attempt to use Unisystem, but I somehow doubt Mongoose would do that. I could see someone using FUDGE, though even having tried to use FUDGE for a campaign, I'm still not entirely sure how well it works for more complicated resolution (like combat).

Well, whatever. I'm not very satisfied with most systems and most of the ones I seem to like I only play at cons and don't really have a deep understanding of or are systems that require a super amount of work on the GM's part. Still, I'd like to see people come up with some elegant rules.

Dr. Who seems suited to me to a relatively rules light system; what I've seen, certainly, has been a rules light show.

As for how to run a game, I think it's a common problem in simulating various shows. In Buffy (the game), you can have interesting specialists as supporting characters, but it seems like many games end up with a lot of awfully fighty types outside of the slayer, something more suited to Angel. There was a Highlander game that was being demoed for a few years at Gen Con that seemed reasonable, but maybe I'm just okay playing wimps. Dr. Who more than those two worlds has the idea of eschewing combat. I think it's easier to have non-timelord supporting characters if you enable lots of quirky abilities and have adventures that are more investigative, social, and where combat is mostly about running away until you find the bad guys' weakness.

People of America please attend carefully:

Series 3 of Doctor Who will commence on the Sci-Fi channel this Friday, 6th July, at 8PM EDT. The Christmas special, 'The Runaway Bride', will be followed at 9.30 by 'Smith And Jones.'
Pay especial attention to the sequence in '...Bride' featuring the tanks. Who gives the order to fire? It is a name you may yet hear again...

Well if a SpaceQuest set of rules are being made, then Doctor Who might be suitable for that. It would be the closest thing to the old FASA rules (which I still have kicking around somewhere) I can think of. Doctor Who is not a setting for a level based ruleset. I have tried to apply it to d20 and for the moment have decided to use the True20 ruleset for my campaign using a variant point buy system based on the Mutants and Masterminds mechanic. For one thing its XP free, which means that killing and looting do not have to be the focus.

However, a game based on RuneQuest (heck I'd take any ruleset) would open some interesting possibilities. Not to mention indulging my fanboy fantasies of integrating it with the Elric/Hawkmoon RQ material to create an expanded EC multiverse.

think the traveller rules could cover doctor who well as it covers all tech levels so from cavemen to the most advance races going(including time lords?)

Am I the only one that thinks WHOQUEST has something to do with Dr. Seuss Characters?

BTW: I LOVE Dr. Who and this was NOT meant in any way to disparage that show.

Everyone'sprobably already seen this but hey:

Series Five and Tennant returns
News Dated: 3/9/2007

Doctor Who has been confirmed for a fifth season whilst Tennant returns for more action in 2009.

Below is the official press release issued by the BBC:

After months of media speculation, the BBC can confirm that the BAFTA Award Winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series in Spring 2010.

Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007. Series Four, which went into production in July 2007, will hitUKscreens in Spring 2008 with a special episode for Christmas 2008.

In 2009 Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies. The full length fifth series will transmit in 2010.

Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says; "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010. "

Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says; "The success of Doctor Who is a fantastic tribute to the dedication and expertise of the production team at BBC Wales who have worked on the project from the outset. This announcement is marvellous news for all involved, and more importantly for the programme's amazing fan base and audience. BBC Wales is looking forward to producing the fifth series."

Following the critically acclaimed season three finale, the BBC has announced that Catherine Tate is set to return to the Tardis for the complete 13 week run of series 4 of Doctor Who, reprising her role as Donna from the 2006 Christmas special. Freema Agyeman, who won praise for her portrayal of Martha Jones in series 3, is also set to return mid series four.

This means no series during 2009 while Tennant plays Hamlet in the west end. Bit of a disaster if you ask me. Hold something off from the public view for a while and they'll forget you ever existed. Ask anyone who's watched sci-fi on the bbc and waited for an episode only to see it replaced without warning by snooker. By 2010 they'll think it's a new Docotr and a new start.
